Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 253pp. Reprint edition. No jacket. "AUTHOR'S NOTE: These stories were written first for The New Yorker. For this book, I have lengthened some with new information, cut a few, and torn others apart and put them together again. The people in a number of stories are of the kind that writers have got in the habit of referring to as "the little people." I regard this phrase as patronizing and repulsive. There are no little people in this book. They are as big as you are whoever you are." Brown textured boards with red lettering on spine and red stain on top edge; slight rubbing on lower edges and light wear across spine extremities (three very small spots of gray peering out); uniform light toning to text. Binding tight still (NO cracks); corners square; previous owner Given name on top inside front cover, else Clean Text. Carefully handled, if read at all. Solid copy. The way to read stories from the first half of the previous Century.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Reprint. Reprint. Cloth. 253pp. fos on ffep. Essays mainly about the culture and people of the lower East side of New York City in the 1930s & early 1940s. Some of the best descriptive essay writing this bookseller has ever read. I don't know how many New Yorkers and other people I have recommended this book to. The title refers to the famous old tavern near Cooper Union, one I try to return when I come to New York. A decent reading copy in spite of the fact that there is a couple of very small pieces missing from the cloth of the head of the spine and a touch of "nibbling" along the adjacent edge. Dj is chipped in the same location, both otherwise complete. Thus fair in actually vg dj. Actually even this reprint is rather scarce.
