Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Erika Diettes' "Memento Mori: Testament To Life". Her poignant tribute to the victims of Colombia's armed conflict, which has claimed more than 250, 000 lives. "Presented as four bodies of photographic work in a two-volume, bilingual edition. The first volume includes hauntingly beautiful images of Diettes' photographic work on display at museums and memorials in areas where the victims 'disappeared', a moving Statement by the artist herself, an Essay by Mexican scholar Ileana Dieguez, and an extensive Conversation with the artist by Anne Wilkes Tucker, Curator of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The second volume showcases the plates from three photographic series: 'Sudarios' ('Shrouds'), photographs printed on linen of women who have witnessed atrocities committed against their loved ones; 'Rio Abajo' ('Drifting Away'), images of articles of clothing of 'the disappeared', photographed in water and embedded in glass; and 'Relicarios' ('Reliquaries'), three-dimensional works of polymer containing mementos and personal effects of the victims" (Publisher's blurb). Erika Diettes' work is in the Permanent Collection of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among other major venues, and is exhibited alongside that of Christian Boltanski and Gordon Matta-Clark. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Very Good. Tenth Thousand. This is an attractive copy of a revised edition of the original, first published in 1846 when Adoniram Judson was still in the United States. (The original Preface notes Judson "is already longing to resume his arduous, but loved employ ; and soon he will be on his return to Burmah ." He and his party sailed from Boston on July 11, 1846.) After the fourth printing of a thousand copies at the end of 1846 the publisher changed from handset type to stereotype. At that point, according to the publisher's note, the "number of pages [was] somewhat increased, by the addition of several articles, chiefly relative to the late departure of the missionaries for Burmah" and the deletion of "a few of the poetical articles" to make room for the updated information. Dowling put together a collection of essays written for the book, other articles published about Judson's missionary work in religious magazines and some poems. It is organized by fifteen "Sketches of Missionary Life" from the Judson's first departure to the field in 1812 to the death of his second wife on the return trip in 1845 and the marriage to his third and return to the field in 1846. Size: 16 mo (6-7"). 294 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is generally tight though a bit weakened at the places where a plate has been bound in. The pages have foxing, especially the first two-thirds, some of which have heavy foxing. The title page is on a darker stock with the title printed in gilt and red. It is facing the Frontispiece of a ship sailing (with the protective tissue in place between it and the title page). In addition, there is a plate with a small sketch of the grave of Judson's first wife, Ann Haseltine Judson (facing p. 137), and a second reproducing a "Fac Simile of Dr. Judson's Hand-writing" (facing p. 214). The text is followed by 18 pages of the publisher's catalog of books for sale, including "Miss Chubbuck's Practical Stories, written by Emily Chubbuck, who also used the penname "Fanny Forrester," and became Judson's third wife in 1846. Very Good hardcover in embossed cloth with a bright guilt illustration of Adoniram Judson preaching to a group in Burma on the front cover and the title and decoration in bright gilt on the spine. The front hinge is shaken with the binding threads exposed between a blank page and the Frontispiece; rear hinge is tight. The corners are bent and the tips have worn through to the boards. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Biography & Autobiography; Adoniram Judson; United States; 19th century; Religion & Theology. Main Picture: Dowling (Ed.), The Judson Offering . (1848) - Spine and front cover. Picture 2: Dowling (Ed.), The Judson Offering . (1848) - Front cover and spine. Picture 3: Dowling (Ed.), The Judson Offering . (1848) - Rear cover and page edges.
