Delia Maisel documents the repression in Jujuy province during Argentina's last dictatorship (1974-1983), focusing on the "Apagones de Ledesma," in which blackouts were used to abduct hundreds of residents. Drawing on survivor testimonies, archival material, and press accounts, the book highlights the activism of Dr. Luis Aredez, the Sindicato de Obreros del Ingenio Ledesma, and the struggle of the "Madres de Ledesma." With a prologue by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel. [From back cover] Esta obra trata de reflejar los hechos ocurridos en relacion con lo que popularmente se conocio como "Los Apagones de Ledesma", se basa en el aporte testimonial de sus protagonistas. En el Departamento de Ledesma, provincia de Jujuy, durante la decada del 60, la llegada del Dr. Luis Aredez, inicia un proceso en defensa de la salud de los obreros azucareros que provocaria su despido de uno de los principales ingenios. En los anos 70 se desarrolla en la zona un movimiento politico sindical de envergadura. El Sindicato de Obreros y Empleados del Ingenio Ledesma cumple un rol fundamental contra un sistema de explotacion. Acompana dicho proceso el nombramiento del Dr. Aredez como intendente, quien toma medidas que afectan a los intereses de los poderosos. Se desata entonces en 1974 la persecucion a dirigentes politicos y sindicales. El 24 de Marzo de 1976 se produce el golpe de estado, ese mismo dia lo secuestran a Luis Aredez, quien permanece un ano detenido, luego le dan la libertad y es nuevamente secuestrado y desaparecido. En Calilegua y Ledesma en el mes de julio se producen cortes de energia y secuestran a cientos de pobladores, algunos van a parar a centros clandestinos de detencion, y sobreviven, en cambio otros permanecen aun desaparecidos. Comienza la lucha de las "Madres de Ledesma", Olga Marquez de Aredez, figura emblematica, junto a otras madres y familiares emprenden un largo camino, al principio en soledad. En la actualidad convocan a una gran multitud. El reclamo permanente de las "Marchas del Apagon" son memoria verdad y justicia por los desaparecidos y juicio y castigo a los culpables.
