About this Item: Royal Society, London. 1st Edition. Six of Anthony van Leeuwenhoek's "microscopical observations" (which took the form of letters, some quite lengthy) to the Philosophical Transactions. Note that this is the entire original volume of the Philosophical Transactions and houses the years 1710, 1711, and 1712, not one of the later 'abridged' volumes. The Phil Trans is the oldest continuously published journal of an academy of science. As such, it established the important principles of scientific priority and peer review that have become the central foundations of scientific journals ever since. Works in every field of science are present. Leeuwenhoek's most important discoveries are contained in these celebrated letters to henry Oldenburg, the Society's secretary. Here he communicates his epoch-making experiments with the microscope, revealing to his contemporaries a previously unknown world -- the world of microorganisms. ALSO INCLUDED: TRUE FIRST EDITION OF DE MOIVRE'S EARLIEST WORK ON PROBABILITY. In 1718, Abraham de Moivre published the Doctrine of Chances, a seminal work on probability that is a slightly expanded version of this rare long memoir published here in the Philosophical Transactions in 1711. In other words, this paper is de Moivre's first important contribution to the calculus of games of chance and probability theory. Titled 'De Mensura Sortis," literally, 'On the measurement of lots,' de Moivre's treatise offers "a systematic presentation of the arithmetic principles upon which are based the solution of problems concerning the advantage of players and the size of wager which may be lain in a wide variety of games of chance" (Walker). Fifty-two pages in length, this work includes a preface, introduction, and 26 mathematical problems. In this paper, de Moivre first presented his explicit definition of classical probability: "If p is the number of chances by which a certain event may happen, and q is the number of chances by which it may fail, the happenings as much as the failings have their degree of probability; but if all the chances by which the event may happen or fail were equally easy, the probability of happening will be to the probability of failing as p and q" (de Moivre 1711). As well, de Moivre is here "the first to present the theory of recurring series; additionally, the theory of partial fractions which Cote's premature death had left unfinished was completed [here], while the rule for finding the probability of a compound event was enunciated" (Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics,384). Cajori, Writing in A History of Mathematics, Cajori stated that [de Moivre's "work on the theory of probability surpasses anything done by any other mathematician except P.S. Laplace" (Cajori, A History of Mathematics, 230). "Although de Moivre was born in France, he emigrated to England when he was very young due to religious persecution. He spent the rest of his life and career in England" (Gorroochurn, Classic Problems of Probability, Problem 9). In Britain, de Moivre worked with Halley, Leibniz, and Newton (with whom he became close friends). He was named a member of the Royal Society of London in 1697. CONDITION & DETAILS: Philosophical Transactions Volume XXVII for the Years 1710, 1711, and 1712. In St. Pauls Church-yard and D. Brown without Temple-Bar: For H. Clements at the Half-Moon [1712]. Ex-libris bearing a tiny "Athenaeum Library, Liverpool" stamp on the title page with no other markings whatsoever. Quarto. (9 x 6.5 inches; 225 x 163mm). [8], 555, [5]. Includes 10 page index. 9 plates [8 copperplate engravings, 1 table]. Full volume, complete. Handsomely rebound in aged calf. 5 raised bands at the spine, each gilt-ruled; gilt-tooled fleur de lis at the spine. Red and black, gilt-lettered spine labels. Tightly and solidly bound. New endpapers. Occassional light toning and foxing. By any measure, near fine condition. Seller Inventory # 352
