First Edition
The author's own copy of his article on de Moivre's De Mensura Sortis, an important early contribution to probability theory, the original offprint specially bound together with a xerox of the original 1712 work, and with Hald's ownership signature to the front free endpaper. De Mensura Sortis, published in Latin in Philosophical Transactions, gave an overview of main concepts such as probability, conditional probability, expectation, dependent and independent events, the multiplication rule, and the binomial distribution. The treatise was dedicated to Sir Isaac Newton, whose priority in the dispute between Newton and Leibniz over the development of infinitesimal calculus de Moivre had defended. Nearly all the work was later incorporated into de Moivre's book The Doctrine of Chances (1718, 1738, 1756), which was the most important textbook on probability theory until the publication of Laplace's Théorie Analytqiue des Probabilités (1812). The Danish statistician Anders Hald (1913-2007) served as professor at the University of Copenhagen from 1960 to 1982. His article in the International Statistical Review gives an overview of de Moivre's work, and is followed by an English translation by Bruce McClintock. Original offprint bound together in 1 volume with xerox copy of de Moivre's 1712 publication (see note), small quarto (246 x 173 mm). Contemporary green half leatherette and marbled sides. In fine condition.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. [ii], 458, [4, index], with 13 folding engraved plates and one large folding table. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, 4to. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF THE FOUNDATION WORK ON THE THEORY OF RISK IN ECONOMICS, AND THE INVENTION OF THE CONCEPT OF MARGINAL UTILITY. '[This] paper has profoundly influenced economic theory, portfolio theory, and operations research and has growing influence in evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology' (Stearns, Daniel Bernoulli (1738): evolution and economics under risk,' Journal of Biosciences 25 (2000), 221-8). 'A number of valuable papers were published by [Daniel] Bernoulli on probability theory and on population statistics . . . The most important treatise, and undoubtedly the most influential, was the De mensura sortis, conceived while he was in St. Petersburg, which contains an unusual evaluation of capital gains, and thus also contains the mathematical formulation of a new kind of value theory in political economy' (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). 'Considering the famous St. Petersburg Paradox a lottery with an infinite expected monetary value Bernoulli (p. 209) observed that most people would not spend a significant amount of money to engage in that gamble. To account for this observation, Bernoulli (pp. 199-201) proposed that the expected monetary value has to be replaced by the expected utility ('moral expectation') as the relevant criterion for decision making under risk' (Barber et al, Handbook of Utility Theory, Vol. 2, p. 758; the page numbers are from the reprint in A.N. Page, ed., Utility Theory: A Book of Readings, 1968). In the St. Petersburg Game, a player may toss a fair coin until Heads occurs for the first time; the payoff is $2 if this occurs at the first toss, $4 if it occurs at the second, $8 if it occurs at the third, etc. The expected payoff is 2 x ½ + 4 x ¼ + 8 x 1/8 + . . . = infinity. Yet no reasonable person would be willing to pay much to play this game for example, the probability of getting at least your money back is 1/64. Daniel Bernoulli learned of this paradox from his brother Nicolaus, who had in turn learned of it from Gabriel Cramer, and his solution is to measure the utility of wealth by a utility function and then to compute not the expected payoff, but its expected utility the utility of an additional dollar to a player is inversely proportional to the wealth already possessed by the player. This leads Bernoulli to propose the logarithm of wealth as the utility function. 'In 1738, Nicolas' cousin Daniel Bernoulli published the canonical 18th Century description of this solution in Specimen theoriae novae de mensura sortis or Exposition of a New Theory on the Measurement of Risk. Daniel Bernoulli proposed that a mathematical function should be used to correct the expected value depending on probability. This provides a way to account for risk aversion, where the risk premium is higher for low-probability events than the difference between the payout level of a particular outcome and its expected value. Bernoulli's paper was the first formalization of marginal utility, which has broad application in economics in addition to expected utility theory. He used this concept to formalize the idea that the same amount of additional money was less useful to an already-wealthy person than it would be to a poor person' (Expected_utility_hypothesis entry on Wikipedia).
