First edition in Chinese (?). 12mp. (6), (144), (6) pp. Inscribed on a rear endpaper, under the manuscript title, "presented to Geo. A. Hearn Esquire by the translator C.H." (Hearn's bookplate on front pastedown). Warren Colburn (1793-1883) first published his text, entitled "First Lessons in Intellectual Arithmetic," in 1821, shortly after graduating from Harvard; the work was widely translated into Hawaiina and other languages for use in schools, including the mission schools of Asia. Hearn (1835-1913) was a New York merchant whose collection of contemporary American art was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Apparently not recorded on OCLC. Very good. Recent three-quarter crushed rust morocco, gilt title and rules on spine, by Phil Dusel, approximating a turn of the 20th century binding by Pfister (their stamp on front endpaper), employing their marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. (#6300).
