Condition is VG- (minus): clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with age-appropriate tanning, unmarked, save for underlining of the titles on Contents page, some underlined again in text. In very good condition; red cloth boards with gilt title on cover and spine. Dust-jacket shows signs of shelf-wear, such as tearing in corners and along the edges. Sticker in upper-right corner and other marks and scuffs on the cover. Pages themselves are clean and unmarked, with very few pencil annotations. This copy previously belonged to Wilfrid Jonson, inscribed to him in pen on front end-paper, dated 1949, signed off by the publisher Carl Jones. Wilfrid G. Jonson was a part-time magician and wrote the "London Notes" column in Sphinx for over twenty-five years which he provided commentary on the British magical scene. Carl Jones was a newspaper publisher (Minneapolis Journal) and book collector best known for publishing Greater Magic in 1938. Al Baker was a professional magician, and inventor of many tricks that he marketed including his Dictionary Test, Al Baker Slates and his version of the Rice bowls. Many of his silk magic effects were included in Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. Al Baker opened a magic shop with Martin Sunshine in Times Square. Al Baker also regularly contributed to The Sphinx and other magic magazines.
