Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Lang Campbell (illustrator). 1st Edition. Small 8vo; 36 pages; color pictorial paper boards, red paper spine, illustrated end papers of a well-attended (by animals) County Fair, a very nice copy of this fragile and important little juvenile, near fine but top of spine expertly repaired. Lang Campbell (1882-1937) was an important American book illustrator and cartoonist, best known for illustrating the Howard Garis cartoon series "Uncle Wiggily's Adventures" (begun in 1910). During the 1930's, Campbell also created a few strips and books of his own, including "Piggy Pigtail", "Paddy the Pup", "Dippy Doodlebug", "Bizzy Izzy Humbug", "The Dinky Ducklings", "Duck and Applesauce", "Dicky Bird's Diary," "Merry Murphy" and more. Merry Murphy is a garden potato. He is given thin arms and legs, a little green hat, gloves and red pointy fairy boots by a toad (actually a good fairy). And he begins his adventures. Merry Murphy is illustrated throughout with rebuses (little pictures replacing words) in every sentence. These are amazing, some printed in up to 10 colors! This is a very nice copy of a fragile book usually found, if at all, in terrible condition.
