Heavy marking to title page and previous owner inscription to top in ink, with name of author written in pencil towards bottom. The odd dog-eared page corner. A little marking to page surfaces throughout but generally reasonably clean, no underlining, marginalia, etc. A scarce first edition copy of one of the earliest calculus textbooks and a work of some significance in the field. See pictures for further information. Charles-René Reynaud (or Reyneau), (1656, Brissac - 24 February 1728, Paris) was a French mathematician. A priest of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, father Reyneau was successively professor of philosophy at Toulon and Pézenas, and then of mathematics at the college of Angers. He was a member of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts d'Angers and free associate of the French Academy of Sciences. [Source: Wiki] Reyneau was a priest who served as a professor of philosophy at Toulon and Pezenas, and then as professor of mathematics at the College of Angers. While he made no significant discoveries in the field of mathematics, Reyneau had a talent for explicating new discoveries in mathematics. His most important work, the Analyse demontree, was a popular textbook in the early 18th century, and was the book used by Jean le Rond d'Alembert to learn the fundamentals of the subject. In it Reyneau describes, explains, and demonstrates the main theories found in the works of Leibniz, Newton, Descartes, Bernoulli, and other pioneering mathematicians of the day. 30 S. Hldr. d. Zt. (fleckig). Erste Ausgabe. - Blake 83 (Chais); Hirsch/H. - Gering fleckig. "As late as 1694 all that Malebranche had for Reynau to do was edit Prestet's posthumous Geometrie. But, after abandoning the last shred of Cartesian mathematics, Malebranche chose Reyneau to write the entirely new textbook required by this turnabout (1698). / "Reyneau worked with two other Oratorians, Louis Byzance and Claude Jaquemet, who were better mathematicians than he. Reyneau had some difficulty in assimilating the differential and integral calculus and was very interested in the debates, provoked by Rolle on this subject. 1st Edition. Full volume. RARE FIRST PRINTING OF BABBAGE'S REPORT ON SCHEUTZ'S DIFFERENCE CALCULATOR. Babbage thought so highly of Scheutz's engine that in an effort to promote [it], presented a talk on it before the Academie des Sciences. In the talk, Babbage describes the machine's construction and functions using his own system of mechanical notation. His speech was published in the volume offered here the Academie's Comptes rendus" (Hook & Norman Origins of Cyberspace, No. 73). Georg Scheutz [Scheuts] and his son Edvard based their calculator on Babbage's own designs. "After reading a description of the Difference Engine (by Babbage), they designed and built their own version. This machine was smaller and lighter than the engine conceived by Babbage. They used gears and levers that would have been suitable for the mechanism of a clock. In contrast, Babbage used technology that would have been appropriate for a steam engine. Babbage's engine, if completed, would have filled a room. The Scheutz engine sat nicely on a table and looked like a complicated music box. Babbage was pleased with Scheutz's engine and praised it publicly" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). In 1854 the Scheutz's took their engine to England "in the hopes of marketing it. There they were introduced to Babbage, who received them with great friendliness and showed a lively interest in their work. Babbage devoted two whole days to investigating Scheutz'sengine for which he had much praise, especially for the way they had succeeded in building it with the funds at their disposals. (ibid). ALSO INCLUDED: M. Flourens Communique la Lettre Suivante Adresse par M. Charles Babbage is a short note discussing Babbage's presentation of the paper offered here to the Academy of Science. CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete full volume. Centennial Number, 589.
