Original advertising herald for the US release of the 1927 film, a shortened 115-minute version re-cut by American playwright Channing Pollock, who is credited on the herald. A scarce piece of ephemera, from one of the most important films of the twentieth-century; the text includes pieces by the cast, crew, director Fritz Lang, and his wife Thea von Harbou - from whose novel the film's scenario derives (and including an outline showing samples that demonstrate the relation between the source-text and the film).

Striking souvenir programme for the British premiere of Lang's masterpiece. Included among statements by the producer, cast and principal crew are some marvellous descriptions and scenes from the making of the film. A full synopsis is given and a particularly interesting section, entitled "Death to the Machines! These pages show how Thea von Harbou constructed the scenario of 'Metropolis' from the lines of her novel", illustrates in parallel text how passages of film were adapted from the fictional source. Metropolis had its premiere at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin on 10 January 1927. The arresting cover image - depicting Maria in the headpiece that transfers her animus to her robotic double - is taken directly from the original German poster artwork by Kurt Degen, a leading designer who created posters for Murnau's Nosferatu (1922), Frankenstein, and M (both 1931). Decidedly scarce: very few copies appear in commerce. Quarto (248 x 189 mm). Single quire, wire stitched, pp. 32. Original pictorial wrappers, monochrome lithograph with blue and red colouring. Many photographic illustrations, portraits and stills from the film. Customary light rusting to staples (not transmitting to programme). In exceptional condition.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. THE ICONIC, COMPLETE SET OF 12 POSTCARDS (90 X 140 MM) FOR FRITZ LANG S MONUMENTAL MOVIE METROPOLIS , PRODUCED BY THE BERLIN PUBLISHERS ROSS FOR UNIVERSUM FILM A.G. FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES, HERE UNIQUELY WITH A CUT-OUT AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE BY THE MOVIE S DIRECTOR, AND ORIGINALLY CONTAINED IN AN AMATEUR COLLECTOR'S ALBUM. A FILM THAT IS REGARDED A PIONEERING SCIENCE-FICTION MOVIE, AND AMONG THE FIRST FEATURE-LENGTH MOVIES OF THAT GENRE, THE FILM WAS INSCRIBED IN UNESCO S MEMORY OF THE WORLD REGISTER IN 2001, THE FIRST FILM THUS DISTINGUISEHD. I have recently seen the silliest film, wrote H. G. Wells in the New York Times in 1927. I do not believe it would be possible to make one sillier. The film he was reviewing, or rather demolishing, was Metropolis, Fritz Lang s acclaimed dystopian masterpiece. Ninety years later, Metropolis is recognised as one of the landmarks of science-fiction and a highpoint of late silent cinema. Its gothic-futurist design, wild-haired maniac scientist and sexualised robot-vamp influenced swathes of science-fiction films to follow, not to mention being reinterpreted in everything from pop videos and adverts to high fashion. Still, Wells found its vision of life a century in the future unrealistic the impossibility of such towering buildings, the low-tech aeroplanes, the workers toiling to produce goods of no value. His low opinion can be mitigated by two factors: first that he was watching not the bona fide Metropolis but an over-enthusiastically censored and re-cut American release, and second that, with a wince, he suspected that many aspects of the story had been lifted from his novel When the Sleeper Wakes, first serialised in 1898. Against the odds, film history has not taken Wells s side. The full Metropolis, the version shown in Germany, remains lost, and for decades its reputation as a triumph of cinematic spectacle rested on butchered versions, such as the one that so underwhelmed Wells. Despite that, Giorgio Moroder s 1984 restoration with eye-popping colour-washes and an uptempo pop-rock soundtrack made it a cult classic. The discovery of missing footage in Argentina in 2008, means that we now have a near-complete Metropolis, and it can be seen to its best advantage. Directed by Lang from a screenplay by his wife The von Harbou, Metropolis concerns a nightmarish future city in which the rich and idle live in cosseted luxury, breathing the fresh air at the top of the city while the proletariat toil in the factories and crawl home to slums beneath the earth. The workers begin to organise under the peaceable leadership of a schoolteacher called Maria (Brigitte Helm), so the ruling-class villains have a man-machine robot take on her seductive image to lead them astray Metropolis is flawed but not hobbled by its message. Its scope and style are still breathtaking, and in its restored version its narrative is thrilling and expertly paced. The grandeur of the looming future-city was inspired by Lang s first glimpse of New York from the water, although film historians will note the influence of Giovanni Pastrone s Cabiria (1914) in the hellish factory. If there s a common ground we can find with Wells s slam review, it s that between the publication of his When the Sleeper Wakes and the release of Metropolis, the new medium of cinema had embraced the science-fiction genre and developed in several exciting directions (Pamela Hutchinson on Metropolis for the British Film Institute, 2017).

First Edition Signed
Signed limited edition, number 40 of 100 copies signed by both Lang and von Harbou and bound in silk, issued as a souvenir of the world premiere of the film Metropolis on 10 January 1927. Original bright red textured silk, gilt titles and decoration to spine and front board, cream endpapers, top edge gilt, cream silk bookmark. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco red cloth solander box. A remarkably fine copy of a fragile production. The soft silk binding is very prone to wear and tarnishing, but this example is uncommonly fresh with only a hint of rubbing to the spine, two isolated spots of wear to the lower corners of each cover. The limitation page specifies that this was produced for the premiere held at Ufa-Palast am Zoo, a grand occasion to which only the most important people, such as Chancellor Wilhelm Marx, Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann, the minister of defence Otto Gessler, and the President of the Reichsbank Hjalmar Schacht, as well as critics of leading newspapers, were invited. There was a parallel screening, at Ufa-Pavillon am Nollendorfplatz, for critics of lesser importance and the general public. The text chosen for this deluxe issue is the second printing (seventh to eleventh thousand); the first printing in book form was issued in advance of the film. It contains the full text, not the cheap abridgement issued the same year. The novel was based on the original screenplay written in 1924 by Thea von Harbou and her husband, the director Fritz Lang. The work was conceived and written with the intention of being adapted for the screen; it was first serialized in the magazine Illustriertes Blatt in 1925, accompanied by promotional screenshots from the upcoming film. The subsequent film is a classic both of German expressionism and of silent-era science fiction. It remains the most expensive silent film ever made, costing approximately 5 million Reichsmark. Despite advances in film-making technology, no other film has surpassed Metropolis in terms of its impact on production design.
