Color frontis by Lionel Edwards and 3 mono full-page illustrations. As was common this had been bound without the exterior cover or end-page adverts but contains all the main copy. About 30 pages, all on glossy paper. Well illustrated. In the title line are firstly details of the front page picture & then other articles of interest. Interior generally in nice clean condition but top edge has had some moisture ingress causing light damage in top margin only (about 1cm) not affecting any text or pictures.

First edition hardcover in olive green cloth covered boards with black titles & illustration on cover of Violet on a grey horse on the edge of the wood blowing her horn, in her corsetted pink coat. Darkened spine shows a title in gilt w/a black illustration of a hunt crop & thong. Boards have a forward lean, show color loss & soil, corners & spine ends bumped & rubbed and a few short splits in the cloth on the spine/gutter corners. No writing seen anywhere. Endpapers are age-toned peach botanical print. 304pp block is tight and clean, no illustrations as published. A rare Victorian story of the Chase about a lady M.F.H. and her sporting exploits afield and afoot.

First Edition. 1933 first edition hardcover in red cloth covered boards with bright gilt spine title. corners lightly bumped, spine ends more so. 151pp text tight and bright w/prior owner's name: Dr. William J. Lay, former MFH of Oakbrook Hounds, IL. on fep, remainder of text tight, crisp and unmarked save for top edge being dyed red as published. Original, un-clipped dust jacket has a 1/2" chip at head of darkened spine and head of rear gutter plus small losses at upper tips. It shows general handling soil but still shows well in new mylar. Jacket cover artt shows a M.F.H. on his galloping horse with hounds in full cry. The dj does has pull resulting in loss on the rear board. Aldin's previous book was Ratcatcher to Scarlet, taking the reader from new entry through the roles, rules and responsibilities of a seasoned member of the field. Here he takes the seasoned member through duties required of the Master of Hounds.

Original, un-clipped color illustrated dust wrapper and red cloth covered, gilt embellished slipcase, limited to 200 copies. Foot of slipcase shows very light shelf wear, book is brand new, 377 pages have not been flipped through yet, all page edges are gilt. Ben dedicates this book to his wife "without whose help I'd have been outfoxed long ago", and adds a bible Psalm(as published, not hand written later). Book *is* dedicated "To Liz and George, Two great hunting personalities and good friends, Best Wishes, Ben Hardaway M.F.H. March 1,1998". Signed by Author.

There is some light rubbing and spotting of the contents, and some light spotting of the preliminary pages; overall, this copy is in good to very good condition. A rare promotional booklet illustrated by Bateman for Moss Bros. Loosely inserted is a typed promotional letter from the publishers.

Bright front panel design. Problems with DJ spine. Lower 3" chipped away. Sunned. DJ had split at spine. "Wherever hunting with hounds goes on in the world at the moment, it has always been either copied, adapted or borrowed from the French or English system: the same may be said of the hounds used. All hounds hunting in any country now are of either French or English origin, or a mixture of both. I propose to describe the hounds of France first, as it was from there that our hounds cam; then those of England, and lastly the strains evolved in America from a mixture of the two foregoing. To go thoroughly into the origin and history of the various breeds of hounds, it will be necessary to describe a number of types, some of them practically extinct now, but to which many of the traits to be found in our modern hounds may be traced. The conclusion that I have reached have not been jumped to in any rash or partisan spirit, but have been arrived at after carefully weighing a great deal of often conflicting evidence, and a great number of different opinions which I shall quote." .
