ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Paperback, 2004). (2003) 2004 paperback edition. 8vo paperback (130 x 198mm). Pp240. B/w photograph plates. Slight use and browning else good second-hand paperback. Mick the Miller's story amounts to nothing less than a fairy tale. Bred by a gambling-mad priest, Mick emerged from the backwoods of Ireland to sweep all before him. As a youngster he survived a killer disease to win Derbies and break records; as a veteran he fought back from injury to bow out before 40,000 adoring fans with victory in the 1931 St. Leger over a distance considered inappropriate for an ageing greyhound. Mick was a freak of nature. He won by cunning and brainpower more than raw speed. In retirement he capitalised on this intelligence and became a role model for Red Rum and Desert Orchid by earning a living on the celebrity circuit, even meeting the King and Queen. But he went one better, starring in his own feature film, Wild Boy (1934) - which he steals from the real actors." .

Along the way, the authors, two of Europe's most celebrated and original thinkers, freewheel through history, touching on the work of Charles Darwin, Rudyard Kipling, Francis Bacon, and even Baron van Munchausen to link the origin of life on earth with the development of the human brain(!). In these pages, you will learn how Aristotle and Galileo disagree, how Queen Christina's clock flummoxed Descartes, and how a jellyfish and an airplane share the same navigational system; you'll even learn the meaning of words like karst and cnidarian. But mostly, readers of Green Fire will enjoy a masterful book that combines scientific rigor with an entertaining narrative to explore the evolution of life on earth and humankind's place in it. The scientific explanation of evolution is more marvelous than any creation myth or metaphor. Earth evolved, and will continue to evolve, in a near~infinite variety of forms that are beautiful and amazing.

Hardcover. Condition: VG-. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, maroon cloth boards shows some scuffing and spotting and there is a couple darker stains, with the largest being on the front. This is the only reason for the lower condition grade of VG- as the book shows very little evidence of being used. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight, no signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no remainder marks, nothing torn or loose. The only handwriting found in the book is at the top of the front end page where there is "ooo" written in red pen. The text pages are clean and bright but the end pages and pastedowns are toned and show some light foxing spots. The large foldout photographs are present and in good shape and without any issues.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. On the reconstitution of a body, death, translation, and editingThis first monograph on artist and filmmaker Nicole Miller focuses on a single sculpture by the artist: Michael in Black (2018). This book brings together a cohort of writers and other artists through newly commissioned texts and works for the page, as well as republished texts and images that exist as their own whole. Some texts hinge on the sculpture, others are tangents. The books texts and images build on each other, functioning as a prism for the publications subject.Michael in Black (2018) is a bronze cast of Michael Jacksons kneeling figure, poured from a mold made directly from his body around 1986. This talismanic object comprises myriad aspects of celebrity and image: the objecthood of the performer, the potency and perversity of objects, death, and grief. This sculpture is an outlier in Miller's work, though it excavates some concerns she has similarly articulated in moving image: her recurring interest in the self-performance of her film subjects; the dehumanizing effects of the mass gaze; the celebrity as a host object for contemporary projections; the tactility of film, the sculptural qualities of editing; and the potential for self-storytelling to reconstitute an individuals wholeness. PF11. On the many resonances of an iconic body Nicole Millers cast of Michael Jackson Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
