The identity of the POW "British Officer" remained a mystery and it is just as well a fictitious personality. In any event the source for the book is an article in the German magazine "Unterhaltungsblätter für Welt- und Menschenkunde" which the publisher, Gerrit Portielje, saw sometime in 1826 and translated into Dutch.
