Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Cooking Without Milk is a straightforward, commonsense cookbook for the 50 million people in America who have milk or lactose intolerances or allergies. Unlike most of the current milk-free cookbooks that are free of lactose but not necessarily of milk, Cooking Without Milk is completely milk-free, with more than 550 recipes and variations of the foods people eat regularly with ingredients found in most grocery stores today. Many current milk-free cookbooks assume that lactose is the only problem ingredient in milk, require ingredients that are hard to find, and presume that cooks are mainly interested in making gourmet, time-consuming dishes. Cooking Without Milk, however, assumes that most people who cook milk-free don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Cooking is not their only pastime.Cooking Without Milk includes a wide range of recipes -- main dishes, vegetables, soups, sandwiches, egg dishes, breads, deserts, beverages, and sauces, gravies, and glazes. Also included are guides to the role of milk and milk products in diet, high-lactose foods to avoid, a guide to calcium and calcium-rich foods, and other useful information for those who cannot consume milk. The author also suggests ways in which to determine one's level of milk intolerance, how to live comfortably while avoiding milk, eating in restaurants, accepting invitations that involve meals, milk products in medications, knowing how to find hidden milk in the ingredients of everyday foods, what to be careful about when buying from an in-store deli, and a list of Web sites for those who want to research milk intolerance for themselves.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. To unify her family, Ave Maria must harness the power of love and its abiding truth in this lyrical and heartfelt novel, the third installment of the New York Times bestselling Big Stone Gap series "Trigiani can make you laugh in one sentence then break your heart in the next."--Mississippi Clarion-Ledger   Ave Maria Mulligan MacChesney has never been a devotee of tarot cards or crystal balls. And yet when the fortune-teller at the county fair suggests that it is time for her to "redream" her life, Ave Maria realizes she is wide open to suggestion. Not a bad idea considering that her beloved daughter, Etta, is growing up fast. In the face of the trials of adolescence, Ave Maria tries to prepare herself for the day when Etta will rebel big-time. Of course, everyone in Big Stone Gap sees it's coming: Cranky cashier Fleeta has warned her, county sexpert Iva Lou has consoled her, even Pearl, now a mother herself, has lent her sympathy--but that doesn't make the changes in Etta any easier to handle.    Milk Glass Moon chronicles the challenges Ave Maria faces in her parenting and in her marriage, with more surprising twists and turns than on the mountain roads of southwest Virginia.   Don't miss any of Adriana Trigiani's beloved Big Stone Gap series BIG STONE GAP * BIG CHERRY HOLLER * MILK GLASS MOON * HOME TO BIG STONE GAP.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. From the prizewinning Jewish Lives series, a lively and engaging biography of the first openly gay man elected to public office in the United States, a man fiercely committed to protecting all minorities? This elegantly written and well-researched book recovers the Jewishness that has too often been erased or glossed over in the mythologizing of a gay icon.??Helene Meyers, Tablet Harvey Milk?eloquent, charismatic, and a smart-aleck?was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, but he had not served even a full year when he was shot by a homophobic fellow supervisor. Milk?s assassination at the age of forty-eight made him the most famous gay man in modern history; twenty years later Time magazine included him on its list of the hundred most influential individuals of the twentieth century. Before finding his calling as a politician, however, Milk variously tried being a schoolteacher, a securities analyst on Wall Street, a supporter of Barry Goldwater, a Broadway theater assistant, a bead-wearing hippie, the operator of a camera store, and an organizer of the local business community in San Francisco. He rejected Judaism as a religion, but he was deeply influenced by the cultural values of his Jewish upbringing and his understanding of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. His early influences and his many personal and professional experiences finally came together when he decided to run for elective office as the forceful champion of gays, racial minorities, women, working people, the disabled, and senior citizens. In his last five years, he focused all of his tremendous energy on becoming a successful public figure with a distinct political voice.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Finally, a serious and candid conversation about raw milk, unlike any that has ever occurred in the many years since raw milk became a subject of contentious debate. The Raw Milk Answer Book raises the most difficult questions surrounding our most controversial food--about the risk of getting seriously ill, whether it should be fed to children, the credibility of European research indicating raw milk has important healing powers --and answers them in calm, non-ideological terms, understandable to beginners and experienced drinkers alike. It is an engaging conversation, unblinking in its focus on real-world data, unafraid to take issue with wild claims on either side of the raw milk controversy. So controversial is raw milk that obtaining believable information about it has become nearly impossible. On one side, proponents often portray raw milk as a miracle food. In their view, it strengthens the immune system so as to reduce our incidence of health problems small and large--from colds and flu to cancer, diabetes, asthma and allergies--and being extremely safe to boot. On the other side, opponents portray raw milk as having no more health or nutritional value than the pasteurized variety that can be bought in any supermarket. They also view it as one of the most dangerous foods known to mankind--so inherently dangerous it can kill you. Obviously, both sides can't be correct. What is the real story? The Raw Milk Answer Book provides the real story by answering more than 200 of the most common questions that come up about raw milk. It is objective and fair. I took the question-and-answer approach because, whenever I tell people that I write and report about raw milk, I am nearly always asked a long list of questions. For example: -Is it safe? -Is it really healthier than pasteurized milk? -Can I get the same nutritional benefits by drinking pasteurized organic milk? -Is raw milk legal to sell in my state? -How do I locate a source to buy it from? -What is a herd share or cow share arrangement? -How do I determine if a particular dairy is producing safe raw milk? -Should I serve raw milk to my children to improve their health? -If there is even a single child getting sick from raw milk, shouldn't it be banned? -What if my spouse and I adamantly disagree about serving raw milk to our family? One question stands out, though: Why is a book necessary to help decide whether to consume a particular food? We don't have books (beyond recipe books) to help people decide whether they want to eat hamburgers or peanut butter or cantaloupe or raw spinach or even pasteurized milk, even though each of these foods has made many people, including children, very sick, and actually killed some. So polarized has the debate become, and so intractable are the positions, that individuals trying to make an informed decision about whether to commit to raw milk aren't sure what to do or whom to believe. Prominent readers of my book are enthusiastic that I have helped bridge this wide gap. Here are some of their comments: From Virginia farmer and author Joel Salatin: Gumpert churns out every answer to every conceivable question in the raw milk controversy. A delightful must-read. From Joseph Heckman, Ph.D. Professor Soil Science, Rutgers University, Past Chair of the Organic Management Systems Community in the American Society Agronomy. David Gumpert explains in clear and lucid prose why more people are making raw drinking milk their personal choice. And beyond that, he provides valuable guidance on food safety, a review of the evidence for health benefits, and sound advice on sourcing this special food. From Mark Kastel, co-founder and Senior Farm Policy Analyst, Cornucopia Institute: Thanks to journalist David Gumpert for writing such an easily digestible primer on such a complex subject.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In his last five years, he focused all of his tremendous energy on becoming a successful public figure with a distinct political voice.…
