Holliday and the Birmingham Collection of Millais drawings / Tessa Sidey -- Appendix : letter from J.R. Halliday to Charles Fairfax Murray -- John Everett Millais : catalogue of drawings and printed illustrations at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. Summary; John Everett Millais (1829-96) is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of his generation. He was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and was later president of the Royal Academy of Arts. Less well-known are his 400 designs for illustrations, made over a period of 30 years. He was immensely varied both in his style and in the types of literature he tackled - he illustrated poetry by Tennyson and Christina Rossetti, novels by Anthony Trollope and Harriet Martineau, children's books, books of sheet music and religious works, culminating in his celebrated The Parables of our Lord in 1864. Through reproductions of drawings, watercolours, wood-engravings, and printed books and periodicals, this book reveals the variety and quality of Millais' work in this often overlooked area of his oeuvre. Millais is without doubt the most significant practitioner in this field of all the Pre-Raphaelite artists. Victorian specialist Paul Goldman examines the importance of Millais' distinguished contribution to the history and development of British book illustration, while Tessa Sidey considers the acquisition of a major collection of Millais drawings by Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. This book, which accompanies an important touring exhibition of Millais' illustrations and designs for illustrations at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery and Leighton House, London, includes a complete catalogue of the Millais holdings of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. Both volumes: Spine and boards faded, boards soiled. 1899 Hard Cover. xvi, 446; xi, 511 pp. Two volume set. Maroon boards with gilt titles on spine, top edge gilt. With illustrations. John Everett Millais, in full Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Baronet, (born June 8, 1829, Southampton, Hampshire, England?died August 13, 1896, London), English painter and illustrator, and a founding member of the artistic movement known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1838 Millais went to London and at the age of 11 entered the Royal Academy schools. Extremely precocious, he won all the academy prizes. In 1848 Millais joined with two other artists, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The Brotherhood was founded in opposition to contemporary academic painting, which the group believed was the result of the example set by Raphael and which had dominated the schools and academies since his time. At the next year?s academy, the novelist Charles Dickens led a violent attack on Millais?s Christ in the House of His Parents (1850), which many considered blasphemous because of its lack of idealization and seeming irreverence in the use of the mundane. - Britannica.

Cloth, folio, 31 cm, 337 pp, ills. From the blurb: "John Everett Millais (1829-1896) is probably best known today as a leading English painter of the nineteenth century and a founder member in 1848 of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In the sphere of black-and-white book and periodical illustration he was an outstanding master. His range was enormous and he could illustrate in a number of different styles to suit the texts he was given. He was equally at home with poetry by Tennyson, novels by Anthony Trollope and Harriet Martineau, and delightful books for children. Because so many of his designs are scattered through various publications, some of which are rare and obscure, this significant area of his uvre has remained under-appreciated. This book is the first to present faithful reproductions of all of Millais's published illustrations. An important feature is the discussion of every image together with its literary context, to ensure a full understanding of the meaning Millais wished to convey and illuminate. The original designs are chiefly wood-engravings, though some were engraved on steel; the small number of etchings that he undertook are also included. " Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.
