Published by Edinburgh: printed by A. Donaldson and J. Reid. For Alexander Donaldson and sold at his shops in London and Edinburgh, 1763

First Edition
8vo in fours, pp. iv, 216; title page with upper outside corner repaired, and some staining in inner margin; else a decent copy, rebound in modern full calf, morocco label. First edition thus: numerous collections with this title (or something very similar to it) were published in 18th century Britain and Ireland, often with the contents much the same. The present collection starts off with several old classics: Milton's Lycidas, Addison's Letter from Italy, and Dryden's Alexander's Feast. But towards the end it includes several poems by contemporary Scottish writers - four poems by Thomas Blacklock and one by William Hamilton of Bangour. Alexander Donaldson was one of the most enterprising booksellers in Britain in the later 18th century: it was he who finally broke the stranglehold of perpetual copyright, by winning the famous case of Donaldson v Becket in 1774. Scarce: ESTC locates four copies in the UK (BL, NLS, Bodleian and National Trust), and four in North America (McMaster, UTS, UCLA and Chapel Hill).
