The landmark publication of Model's work, from the 1930s to the 1970s, features her best-known, incisive images of humanity, from tourists on the Cote d'Azur and high-society New Yorkers, to entertainers, to outcasts, and more. From the preface by Berenice Abbott: "I know of no photographer who has photographed people as inwardly as Lisette Model. Her people are direct targets of an artist's vision. She has that necessary rapport with the human species of whatever hue or faction. She is very much at home with all kinds of people. She feels for them and understands them. Sensitivity and tenderness predominate so that the camera finger is on their very pulse. She is concerned about them, and allows them to speak for themselves.It is a large order to look at life unblinkingly in the midst of general confusion. The December 1977 issue of Camera, the Swiss photography magazine, focused completely on the work of the Austrian-born American photographer Lisette Model (1901-1983). The photographs are accompanied by an introduction by Allan Porter, editor of Camera from 1966,… a statement by Berenice Abbott, fellow teacher at the New School for Social Research in New York, the artist's statement for Model's 1965 Guggenheim exhibition, and a short autobiography. Quarto. 24 full-page black and white photographs, 8 of which are folding. Original printed wrappers, text printed in white on green paper. An excellent copy with mildly rubbed extremities and a small stain to lower rear wrapper.
