Seller: Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Oversized hardcover. Blue-gray paper over boards with tan title label on front cover, with black and orange lettering. Title page dated 1924. Unpaginated, with numbered plates. 12 black and white plates total. In good condition. Covers appear quite toned and rubbed, with a few foreign markings visible on back cover. Corners and spine appear bumped, resulting in some chipping to paper and slightly exposing boards beneath. Covers feel a little loose from binding, but are still attached. Gutter inside is cracked through, revealing a bit of binding, but pages are not loose from binding. Although outside appearance is quite worn, inside contents remain in good, readable condition. Some toning to pages from age, but overall they are free of marks. Black and white plates remain clear and unfaded. This is an oversized (and overweight) book. Extra shipping charges may be required for international or priority delivery.

First edition. 252x321mm. pp12 with twelve plates on card protected by tissue paper on which the details of the etching are printed. Original blue papered boards with label in centre of upper cover. Original and rare cream coloured illustrated dust jacket lettered in red. Very slight chipping to the dust jacket but overall in very good condition. The book itself is in fine condition throughout and the plates are superb. This is number 30 of 32 in a series published by The Studio highlighting the work of etchers from Rembrandt to the 20th century. Brangwyn was an enormously inventive and productive artist, working across a vast range of media. Although largely self taught, he did have some training with William Morris. The etchings selected here show Brangwyn's humanity as an artist, his understanding of darkness and suffering captured with a fluid beauty of line and shade.
