Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. No Dust Jacket As Issued. First American Editiion. 288 Pages. Of this First American Edition 250 copies have been numbered and signed by the author and this is copy no. 189. Pristine condition with attractive red endpapers and a black flawless slipcase. Black clothbound book stamped with red meta…llic lettering and decoration on the spine. This is number nine in the Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin series. During the 1950's the author became involved in strip cartoons and eventually created his revolutionary Modesty Blaise, syndicated in more than 42 countries. The strip led to a series of eleven bestselling novels about Modesty and her faithful lieutenant, Willie Garvin. In this classic return we see Modesty both at her most feminine and at her toughest. Trapped in an earthquake disaster with a dying man, she makes a promise that is to lead her and her faithful friend Willie Garvin into the most perilous crisis of their careers. Their quest takes them from Tangier to Paris, from the Riviera to Corsica, and finally to a stronghold in the heart of the Atlas Mountains, their every move observed and manipulated by El Mico, the most notorious and dangerous criminal genius in the Mediterranean. Unknown to Modesty, she holds a secret that El Mico covets above all else, and she is brought to a final confrontation with death in the stronghold of Xanadu. As in all the Modesty Blaise stories, this book is peopled with a host of eccentric characters: the engaging Dr. Giles Pennyfeather, Modesty's devoted friend, and her opponents Little Krell, a prodigy in combat, the Silk brothers, juvenile adults who deal in death, and the astonishing Nanny Prendergast. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st ed. LIMITED EDITION. 1 of 26 LETTERED copies [this being "H" ] SIGNED & LETTERED by O'Donnell on limitation page, in slipcase with dust jacket as issued. The 8th novel in the series. The character Modesty Blaise was created by O'Donnell for a comic strip…in the early 1960s. BBC Radio produced a six-part Thirty Minute Theatre adaptation of the novel in 1978 starring Barbara Kellerman as Modesty Blaise with James Bolam as Willie Garvin and Richard Vernon as Sir Gerald Tarrant. "Maude Tiller, one of the few female agents in Sir Gerald Tarrant's secret service, is miserable. Her last assignment involved her having to submit to sexually degrading treatment by Paxero, the man she had been sent to spy on. And she hadn't even learned anything about the rich and enigmatic Paxero to justify the disgusting things she had let herself be subjected to. Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin discover how their good friend Maude has been mistreated, and they decide to teach Paxero a lesson. But when they break into his villa on the outskirts of Geneva they unexpectedly find a Breguet watch that was a gift from Modesty to Danny Chavasse, a very close friend of Modesty's. Everyone thought Danny had died when a cruise ship sank two years ago along with some 30 other people, but finding his watch indicates that Danny's fate was not as simple as that. This is the start of the journey that leads to Limbo, Paxero's secret and hidden plantation in the jungles of Guatemala. Limbo is a bizarre community led by Paxero's domineering aunt Benita, farmed by slaves, very special slaves, rich and famous men and women who have been selected by Aunt Benita and kidnapped and will now spend the rest of their lives at hard labour, watched over by armed Special guards. The "last day in Limbo" occurs when Paxero decides to shut the plantation down, and orders the guards to kill all of the slaves -- who now include Modesty, who has let herself be captured so as to infiltrate Limbo. Modesty leads a slave uprising, and Willie and Maude arrive just in time, after having hacked their way through the jungle. A final battle ensues, with Paxero and his heavily armed guards holed up in the big house, waiting for reinforcements to arrive by aircraft." -- Wikipedia entry. Signed by Author. Contact seller5-star sellerdj. First printing. Doubly inscribed first edition of the first book featuring the popular comic-strip character Modesty Blaise - signed by both the author and Terence Stamp, who starred in the 1966 film adaptation. O'Donnell first came up with the idea of "a woman strong-arm character, and immediately found himself taken over b…y Modesty Blaise." First begun as a comic strip, its success led to a series of books, short stories, and films. In this first book, a mission to undermine the heist of millions of pounds worth of diamonds takes her from London through Europe to Cairo. It famously makes an appearance in the film PULP FICTION. A beautiful copy with a memorable jacket, quite scarce signed. 7.75'' x 5''. Original blue paper boards, gilt-lettered spine. Original unclipped (18s) pink pictorial dust jacket. 224 pages. Jacket with a bit of foxing and a couple spots of soil; shadows of small former tape reinforcements to verso folds. Book with foxing to edges, moreso to top edge, and slight bump to head of spine, else firm. Very good plus in very good jacket. Signed.
