Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Gosse, P.H. (illustrator). 1st Edition. NATURAL HISTORY. MOLLUSCA, written and illustrated by Philip Henry Gosse, hardcover, probable first edition, illustrated, 1854. BOOK CONDITION: poor [reading copy only]. The text block and illustrations are in fair condition with no dogears or tears but with occasional stains. Pages are age-toned and pulling away from binding, but no pages appear to be missing. There is no book plate nor signature of prior owner, but the title page has been embossed with a stamp indicating this copy was in a Sunday School library. The first free endpaper has been torn out. There are various other imperfections inside the front and back covers. The gold boards are in fair condition (corners bumped, spine bumped and faded/discolored, several small holes). 6 ¾ x 4 ½, 328 pages, 11 ounces XX [from Wikipedia] Philip Henry Gosse (6 April 1810 - 23 August 1888), known to his friends as Henry, was an English naturalist and popularizer of natural science, virtually the inventor of the seawater aquarium, and a painstaking innovator in the study of marine biology. Gosse created and stocked the first public aquarium at the London Zoo in 1853 and coined the term "aquarium" when he published the first manual, The Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea, in 1854. His work was the catalyst for an aquarium craze in early Victorian England. Gosse was also the author of Omphalos, an attempt to reconcile the geological ages presupposed by Charles Lyell with the biblical account of creation. After his death, Gosse was portrayed as an overbearing father of uncompromising religious views in Father and Son (1907), a memoir written by his son, Edmund Gosse, a poet and critic.
