Add to basketHardcover. First Edition. Numerous good quality engraved plates nearly all attractively hand coloured with a text, a great source of the language of 19th century fashion, which is a mix of reportage of the events and parades of the fashion year, analysis and instruction on the plates, with serialised fiction. The 1858 vol has 48 plates of which 2 are b&w folding; 1859 ditto; 1860 47 plates of which 2 are b&w folding; 1861 has 48 plates of which 2 are b&w folding and one other b&w, plus a detached cutting sheet; 1862 has 49 plates of which 2 are b&w folding plus 3 cutting sheets bound in; 1963 has 50 plates of which 2 are b&w folding and the third is hand coloured and folding, and one of the normally hand coloured ones is b&w. In sum, 276 hand coloured plates. The plates have been a little cropped during the binding with occasional trimming to the image or the caption. A few plates are loose with consequent ruffling and browning to the exposed edge. Some of the folding plates have been carelessly folded. One volume has some marked offsetting from the text to some plates and a few have foxing. The 1858 year is in a different binding to the others. All are in full decorative leather but in very worn condition with chips off the spines. 1859 has one board missing and the spine flopping off. The covers of 1858 are both detached. Poor, but the plates are, nonetheless, rather wonderful.
