The unclipped dust jacket is fine, and both the jacket and the book were printed in Japan. There are five full-page, polychrome illustrations. This collaborative work was first published in 1691. It takes its title from the opening poem: "First Winter Rain/the monkey wants/a raincoat too". The introduction notes that "Monkey's Raincoat is generally considered to represent the best and most typical of Basho's mature style." There is a 15-page introduction on haiku and Basho's poetics, followed by 76 pages of text and illustrations. This is a great opportunity to acquire a scarce hard cover copy of this 1973 book in excellent condition with a fine unclipped dust jacket.
