Book First Edition
2 volumes quarto 10 1/2 x 8 inches, handsomely bound in uniform period full tree calf, spines gilt in compartments, some wear. Original marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece to each volume, title vignette to second work, xii, 196 and xxvi, 98 pages illustrated with 100 EROTIC ENGRAVED PLATES in the form of cameos or medals, (50 in each volume). Plates 11 and 12 bound out of sequence but both volumes complete. Bibliography - Cohen-De Ricci 474-475. Some general spotting. Tall copy with wide margins. First edition of both volumes of Pierre-Francois d'Hancarville's famous study of Roman debauchery and erotic history, here in a contemporary uniform binding. The engravings were supposedly after genuine antique gems but, as Cohen states, they are largely the inventions of the author. A historian and art dealer, Hancarville (1719-1805) acted on behalf of the collector Sir William Hamilton (ambassador at Naples from 1764 to 1800), in his search for antique works of art, introducing him to the Porcinari family, whose collection of antiquities he purchased in 1766, and later sold to the British Museum.

Book
Couverture rigide. Cohen, 475-476. Brunet, III, 1875. Pia, p. 506. Dutel, III, A-732.
