Hardback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Laforgue, Jules. Six Moral Tales. Edited & Translated [from the French] by Frances Newman. New York: Horace Liveright, [1928]. With an 18-page introduction by the editor. First edition in English. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-292. Original purple boards, half-cloth spine panel stamped in black, other edges rough trimmed, gray endpapers. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Boards faded, else a nice copy. #1063. $12. Translation of Moralites Legendaires (1887), published around the time of the author's death at the age of 36. The author belongs in the tradition of the exoticism and perversity that stretches from Baudelaire to Huysmanns (especially, in this case, of Au Rebours) but he undercuts that atmosphere at times with irony and flippancy. Heroic mythology collides with realistic or even naturalistic psychology. The results are not entirely successful, but are worth a look. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-101. Bleiler (1978), p. 117. Reginald 08528.
