Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. "Fire at Sea- The Story of the Morro Castle" by Thomas Gallagher. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: "On a stormy September night twenty-five years ago, the luxury liner Morro Castle, was plunging through heavy seas on its return voyage to New York from Havana. It was shortly after two o'clock in the morning and the ship was just a few miles off the New Jersey shore. Most passengers were sleeping; some were finishing up a game of cards; others were enjoying their nightcaps before retiring. Suddenly, spreading with tragic speed, sheets of flame engulfed the entire superstructure and within an hour hundreds were dead or floundering in the water following mass abandonment of the doomed ship. There are eight pages of b&w photos at page 120. This was not just an accident; disputes among crew and captain were behind this tragedy, a sad read considering all the people lost at sea. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket exhibits some light edge wear including small tears and chips but nothing extreme (please see the photos). The hard covers are clean and bright with just some faint bumping particularly to the bottom corners. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and sqare. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Various (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. First edition. Oblong oversized hardcover. Fine, fresh copy in equally fine dust jacket. SIGNED BY COYLE ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER AND INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by Whitcraft on the half title page. Illustrated endpapers. 149 p. with list of passengers and crew, chronology. Profusely illustrated with vintage photographic images. Heavily illustrated recounting of one of America's great maritime disasters, the September, 1934 wreck and burning of the cruise ship Morrow Castle off Asbury Park, New Jersey. The ship was returning from a cruise to Cuba and was in its final day at sea before its scheduled arrival in New York when its captain suddenly died of an apparent heart attack and a fire broke out on board at 2:50 AM. The fire spread quickly ( knocking out power and the ship's radio so only one SOS was sent); in the ensuing panic just six of the ship's twelve lifeboats were launched. In all 137 persons lost their lives. This fascinating volume presents the most varied collection of photographic images of the disaster and also provides the personal stoies of some of the people who were on the ship.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Poor. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. 280 pages (complete). The desperation and destruction of Morro Castle in 1934, four years after her maiden voyage, by fire led to considerable safety changes to the construction and maintenance of cruise-liners. The dustjacket of this copy of Gallagher's investigation into the fire, is scruffy, worn, wrinkled from damp but filmicly dramatic. It is secure and sure. HARD BACK BROWN. Condition: AS NEW. JACKET: VERY GOOD DJ. FIRST PRINTING. First Printing, 2012; brown cloth hardcover in new condition with gold gilt title to front cover and spine; profusely illustrated bw photographs, biographical references; dust jacket is new condition It was the great disaster of the 1930s, a horrific experience for all those aboard the ill-fated liner Morro Castle. Sailing to New York from exotic, anything-goes Cuba, the luxurious cruise ship was filled with passengers finding an escape from the Great Depression. But, the night before arriving home, the ship became a scene of panic as a raging fire quickly spread, killing 137 and sending many overboard. In Inferno at Sea -- a large-format hardcover, filled with never-before-seen photographs -- we finally hear those personal accounts. Survivors tell their stories, family and friends share narratives of those lost that night, rescuers and volunteers all contribute to give us a rare glimpse into the events of September 8, 1934. The fading, maritime mystery of the Morro Castle fire remains, but those closest to the disaster speculate about what really happened, and we gain a new perspective on a famous and tragic New Jersey shipwreck.
