Profusely illustrated with vintage photographic images. Heavily illustrated recounting of one of America's great maritime disasters, the September, 1934 wreck and burning of the cruise ship Morrow Castle off Asbury Park, New Jersey. The ship was returning from a cruise to Cuba and was in its final day at sea before its scheduled arrival in New York when its captain suddenly died of an apparent heart attack and a fire broke out on board at 2:50 AM. The fire spread quickly ( knocking out power and the ship's radio so only one SOS was sent); in the ensuing panic just six of the ship's twelve lifeboats were launched. In all 137 persons lost their lives. This fascinating volume presents the most varied collection of photographic images of the disaster and also provides the personal stoies of some of the people who were on the ship.
