** SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ** 2ND EDITION, 1921 (1st was 1916) ** Hardcover WITHOUT dustjacket. Published in New York by Henry Holt and Company, states "1921" on the title page, with 75 pages + 1 page of ads at the end. This edition has a frontispiece portrait of Frost (black-&-white photo of plaster sculpture of Frost by Arnoldo Du Chene), frontispiece under tissue guard. Second Edition has a different format from the 1916 1st Edition. Cloth spine over paper-covered boards. SIGNED by Frost at the top of the blank front page: "Robert Frost / Pittsfield June 2 1924". Frost's daughter, Lesley, operated a bookstore in Pittsfield, MA, named the "Sign of the Open Book", and Frost likely signed copies for customers at that location. A Very Good copy, with none of the heavy wear to the boards often seen with this book. The book is remarkably clean and stain-free. There is wear at the corner-tips, but the corners are not bumped. There is light wear to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine, but no tears and no fraying. There are only very occasional, slight spots of wear along the board edges; the great majority of those edges have no wear at all. The front and rear board surfaces show virtually no wear or any signs of use, are almost fresh and Fine. Unfortunately, the gilt lettering on the spine is entirely gone, and the embossed gilt lettering on the front board, while there, is faint and almost all rubbed away. The book is square and straight, and is quite firm and tight in its binding. The hinges are sound and undamaged, and there are no pages missing, loose, torn, or wrinkled. Frontispiece and its tissue guard are Fine. The pages are moderately age-darkened from the edges, but internally the book is otherwise Fine, no foxing, unmarked. All text is crisp and legible. Aside from the author's signature, there is no writing, underlining, highlighting, or other such markings anywhere in the book. Five-star seller, buy with confidence, professional bookseller for 35 years, selling books online since 1995. B51.

Hardcover. Second edition, second printing. This 1924 second printing of the second edition of Frost's third published book is signed and inscribed in three lines by Frost on the upper front free endpaper recto: "Robert Frost | South Shaftsbury | Vermont". The location is noteworthy; "The Robert Frost Farm in South Shaftsbury, known as 'The Gully,' was closely associated with the poet's life and work between 1929 and 1938. While this was his residence, he received two Pulitzer Prizes, in 1931 forCollected Poemsand in 1937 forA Further Range. Frost wrote many of the poems found in the latter volume at 'The Gully.'"This second edition was published in 1921 and reprinted in 1924. Condition is good, sound and complete but unlovely. The publisher's binding of quarter dark green linen over green, paper-covered boards is square, tight, and unfaded, but considerably worn, the cardboard showing through at the edges of the boards, the cloth spine ends slightly frayed, the boards also stained, and the spine's gilt print only faintly legible. The contents, though age-toned, are clean and complete with no spotting or previous ownership marks other than the author's inscription. The tissue guard protecting the frontispiece remains intact. Differential toning of the front endpapers indicates that something now absent was once laid in. Mountain Interval was Frost's first book for which the U.S. edition takes precedence, both A Boy's Will and North of Boston having been first published in Great Britain. "Mountain Interval, which appeared in November 1916, offered readers some of his finest poems, such as "Birches," "Out, Out--," "The Hill Wife," and "An Old Man's Winter Night." The volume opens with the poem "The Road Not Taken." It was in 1916 that Frost was made Phi Beta Kappa poet at Harvard and elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters.Iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963), the quintessential poetic voice of New England, was actually born in San Francisco and first published in England. When Frost was eleven, his newly widowed mother moved east to Salem, New Hampshire, to resume a teaching career. There Frost swiftly found his poetic voice, infused by New England scenes and sensibilities. Promising as both a student and a writer, Frost nonetheless dropped out of both Dartmouth and Harvard, supporting himself and a young family by teaching and farming. Ironically, it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children "the place to be poor and to write poems" that finally catalyzed his recognition as a noteworthy American poet. The manuscript of A Boy's Will was completed in England and accepted for publication by David Nutt in 1913. A convocation of critical recognition, introduction to other writers, and creative energy supported the English publication of Frost's second book, North of Boston, in 1914, after which "Frost's reputation as a leading poet had been firmly established in England, and Henry Holt of New York had agreed to publish his books in America."Accolades met his return to America at the end of 1914 and by 1917 a move to Amherst "launched him on the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever "subjects" he pleased at a congenial college and "barding around," his term for "saying" poems in a conversational performance." By 1924, the year this second printing of the second edition was issued, Frost had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent the final decade and a half of his life as "the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century" with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961).References: Crane A4; ANB; NPS.

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the poet on the front free endpaper, "Marie A. Hodge, from Elinor & Robert Frost". This copy has the first state text, with the duplicated line 8 on page 88 and "Come" for "Gone" in line 16, page 93; both misprints are here hand-corrected by Frost. Marie Amanda Hodge (1856-1944) met Frost in 1911, before he became a published poet, while they were teaching together at the New Hampshire Normal School (now Plymouth State University). An amateur poet herself, she took an early and active interest in Frost's writing. Before leaving for Britain the following year, he presented her with a manuscript copy of his poem "October", then still unpublished. They kept up a transatlantic correspondence, Frost sending Hodge copies of his first two volumes of poetry, and Hodge ordering more copies on behalf of her students. After Frost's return to America, Hodge arranged for him to return to the Normal School in July 1916, where he gave a series of five lectures and poetry readings. In that month's issue of the school magazine, Frost published his lecture "A Time to Talk", and Hodge wrote a brief, admiring testimonial of the poet, which offers an insight into his life before fame. "One cannot remain long in the presence of Mr. Frost without discovering the elements of poetic genius which have found expression in the two volumes of poems lately published by him. The forces which brought him early and complete recognition were recognized in a lesser degree by the students of his classes. His students appreciated his sensitive, sympathetic temperament, and his keen understanding of human nature which placed him in close contact with each mind. Only in intimate conversation did Mr. Frost refer to himself as a writer. Although we had some conception of the rare qualities and unusual genius of the man, because of this reticence, we could not realize that he would so soon merit and win the fame which is his" (quoted in Sheehy, p. 84). Six of Frost's letters to Hodge survive in the archives of Boston University. Crane A4. Donald G. Sheehy, "The Correspondence of Robert Frost and Marie A. Hodge (1913-1916)", The Robert Frost Review, no. 4, 1994. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, top edge cut, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco folding box. Hint of rubbing to extremities of cloth; small nicks to edges of jacket, short split to front flap fold, flaps unpriced as issued: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
