Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. Softcovers. Generally fine. Signed on the first page by Paul J. Childress, son of Rev. Bob Childress, the subject of this biography. xii+ 253 pp. Biography of Robert Walter "Bob" Childress (c 1889-1956), the Presbyterian minister who became known in the Southern Appalachain region for his work in promoting education and transforming the area's tradition of violence. Childress was born in "The Hollow" (Ararat, Virginia), a remote Buffalo Mountain area that was plagued by ignorance, alcoholism, and violence, growing up in the Primitve Baptist tradition. Virtually unschooled, Childress himself resorted to violence and alcohol but after witnessing a massacre at a courthouse turned to law enforcement. After regularly attending a Presbyterian church, he decided to become a minister. Through 30 years in the ministry, he built and led congregations at six famous "Rock Churches". His own autobiography was unpublished but Richard C. Davids, who had personally known Rev. Childress, wrote this biography that was called by Walter Mondale a book".that more for the Blue Ridge what Mark Twain's tales did for the Mississippi.". Signed.

Don Benito Wilson (nee Benjamin Davis Wilson) is remembered as the namesake of Mount Wilson, but few know he was the second mayor of Los Angeles, that his landholdings become the sites of Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Riverside and more. As Captain Wilson, he fought to defend Los Angeles in the Mexican War of 1846-1847, was taken prisoner and almost executed. Twenty-six State Senators divvy up the district that Benjamin Wilson once represented. As a Los Angeles County supervisor he oversaw a Los Angeles County that included what is today Orange, San Bernardino and Kern Counties. His Wilson College was the predecessor of the mighty University of Southern California. Many of the railroads he helped bring to Southern California still haul freight over the original rights of way that he helped determine. Southern California will perhaps never again see a person who made such a mark on so many different fields as Don Benito Wilson." very very good, clean and tight. Inscribed by Author( BBDJ. At 8:32 a.m., Sunday, May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted with the explosive force of 50 million tons of TNT. Here, Shirley Rosen tells the story of Harry Truman, the man who became an American folk hero.
