Josephine, whom he loves, whom he had known since childhood but who had married an irresponsible author, also reaches a breaking point and leaves her husband and also goes home to Custis. There, both go through months of individual and mutual doubt, defeatism, until Jo tells Cy off for his all-or-nothing idealism, his pursuit of perfection which is really a fear of failure, and together they make a new start.
