Add to basketFirst UK edition. Hardcover. Page edges and endpapers a little toned, spine a touch canted, otherwise very good in very good dustjacket with a few small professionally closed tears and small restored chips (a thumbnail-size one on the back panel in a black space). Sterling price 9/6 net intact on the jacket flap, and the dustjacket is wonderfully illustrated by John Morris, same design for both US and UK editions, longbowmen against the Queen Mary! Prolific Irish-born journalist/writer's most famous novel (followed by other "Mouse" books, none quite as popular), and basis for the hilarious 1959 film starring Peter Sellers (playing three parts), Jean Seberg, Leo McKern and others, in which Grand Fenwick, the tiny grape-growing duchy at the northern foot of the Alps, being bankrupt (due to cheap US wine) decides to declare war on the USA, to be defeated and receive Marshall Aid. One can only speculate on the changed title for the UK edition (the US edition precedes, but both firsts are uncommon): possibly the British publisher (or the author?) preferred the British version, and weren't afraid to pun Steinbeck's big name American classic of the Depression, especially since it works so well with the David & Goliath theme, and is arguably more clever than "The Mouse that Roared".
First edition. First printing of this clever Cold War-era satire, following the chaos after the tiny Duchy of Grand Fenwick declares war on the United States. The permanently pre-industrial Duchy of Grand Fenwick, founded on the cultivation of a very particular kind of wine grape, was in a tight spot: their prized export was being outsold by a knockoff from California. The tiny aggrieved nation, therefore, decided to engage in the "one method of getting money from another nation that is recognized by tradition as honorable": they declare war on the United States. After a clerical error, an invasion, and a mix-up involving the most powerful bomb in the world (among other comedic shenanigans), the US is forced to reckon with its unexpected foe. THE MOUSE THAT ROARED was adapted into a 1959 film starring Peter Sellers in the three main roles. While it underperformed in its native Britain, the movie was a surprising US hit, and is now a Cold War cult classic. 8'' x 5.25''. Original boards. Original unclipped ($3.50) color pictorial dust jacket designed by John Morris. 280 pages. Jacket lightly edgworn. Tape reinforcement to verso at head of spine. Two small unobtrusive stains at spine fold. Some rubbing to rear panel. Book has some shelfwear to extremities, some minor soil. Overall, sound. Very good plus in very good jacket.
WIBBERLEY, Leonard. THE MOUSE THAT ROARED. Boston: Little, Brown, [1955]. 8vo., cloth & boards in dust jacket. First Edition. Signed presentation from Wibberley on the front endpaper: "To Armand Feichtmeir, with all good wishes. Sincerely, Leonard Wibberley." Basis for the 1959 film adaptation with Peter Sellers portraying three different characters. Near fine; moderate edgewear (few light creases & minor soil) d/j. Enclosed in a custom-made leather & cloth clam-shell box, with tooled spine and a portrayal of a mouse roaring with gold coming out of his mouth on the front cover. Unusual & unique! $1750.00.
