Fairchild was a broker and friend and neighbor when Howells lived at Belmont. See "Selected Letters of W. D. Howells" for the relations between Howells and Fairchild. Fairchild owned and rented Howells' home in Belmont, and he conducted negotiations for publication of Howells' works by Harper when Osgood failed. Note that this book is published by Harper. From the library of Christoph Lohmann, who was Associate Editor of "Selected Letters of W. D. Howells," but without any indication to that effect.Wear with slight loss at the head and foot of the spine, fading on the spine, internals very nice. An important association copy.

Hardcover. First Edition. Original red cloth. BAL 9642. Illustrated with eight plates. A fine presentation copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to "Joanna/from her brother,/W.D. Howells." We are not sure who the recipient is as Howells, one of eight children, did not have a sister named Joanna. He did have a brother named John, but he died in 1864. Slight hinge crack. Spine sunned and a little soiled. Very Good.
Condition: good. Old bookstore sticker inside the front cover. Some shelf, storage or usage wear present. The binding is tight and all pages are present. Does not appear to have come with a dustjacket originally. The pages appear unmarked. Pictures available upon request. Individually inspected by Shadow.
