Add to basketCondition: Good. 1st Edition. A rare silk playbill issued for a benefit performance for Mrs Raymond at the Royal Shakespearean Theatre Stratford on 28 May 1830. Headlined under the patronage of Lady Skipwith, the evening centres on the historical drama Brutus or The Fall of Tarquin, accompanied by additional musical and theatrical entertainments. Produced on silk as a commemorative keepsake, the piece survives as a scarce example of early nineteenth century theatre culture. Description; Single silk playbill printed in black letterpress with large display typography. The broadside announces a benefit night for Mrs Raymond under the patronage of Lady Skipwith. Programme includes the historical play Brutus or The Fall of Tarquin, followed by further performances including musical pieces and the farce Rencontre or Love will find out the Way. Cast list and performers are detailed throughout. Printed by Ward of Stratford. The silk shows creasing, wear, small stains, and splits from historical folding, some repaired. Edges pinked, typical of silk playbills of the period. Despite condition issues, the piece remains intact and visually strong. Collation and Bibliography; Single silk broadside Approximate size 540 x 210 mm Letterpress printed on silk Pinked edges No standard bibliographic reference Ephemeral theatrical printing rarely recorded in institutional catalogues Why It Matters; Silk playbills represent a higher tier of theatrical ephemera, produced in limited numbers as commemorative souvenirs rather than disposable notices. Their survival rate is significantly lower than paper equivalents. This example is particularly notable for its early date, Stratford association, and named patronage under Lady Skipwith. It provides direct insight into provincial theatre, benefit culture, and performance programming in early nineteenth century England. For collectors, it offers a rare combination of textile printing, theatre history, and display presence. Offered by Atlas Rare Books, specialists in rare and antiquarian books.
