Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Circa 1940 printed Xmas card. The cover illustration reproduces a silk scroll sent by patients of the Tsinan Leprosy Hospital, China to their supporting friends of the Mission to Lepers. The Chinese characters mean ; "May all your months be peaceful ones." Inscription: From Mr & Mrs J….G. Roberts* to you all, Brocksford. 10 x 12.5 cm. Some light discolouration alongside creasing to upper corners. Brocksford Hall is a country house about one mile (1.6 km) east of Doveridge village, in the south west corner of Derbyshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. The house was built in 1893 for Charles William Jervis Smith and designed by the Chester architectural practice of Douglas and Fordham. From 1942 to 1994 it was used as an independent preparatory boarding school. In 1939 at the start of the Second World War, the headmaster of Birkdale School, Mr John Gibson Roberts evacuated the pupils to Brocksford Hall. After the war, Roberts moved his pupils to Uttoxeter creating Brocksford Hall School, whilst twenty boys returned to Oakholme Road under Heeley in 1942 who later became Head Master in 1943.

Add to basketCondition: Good. 1st Edition. A rare silk playbill issued for a benefit performance for Mrs Raymond at the Royal Shakespearean Theatre Stratford on 28 May 1830. Headlined under the patronage of Lady Skipwith, the evening centres on the historical drama Brutus or The Fall of Tarquin, accompanied by additional musical and theatric…al entertainments. Produced on silk as a commemorative keepsake, the piece survives as a scarce example of early nineteenth century theatre culture. Description; Single silk playbill printed in black letterpress with large display typography. The broadside announces a benefit night for Mrs Raymond under the patronage of Lady Skipwith. Programme includes the historical play Brutus or The Fall of Tarquin, followed by further performances including musical pieces and the farce Rencontre or Love will find out the Way. Cast list and performers are detailed throughout. Printed by Ward of Stratford. The silk shows creasing, wear, small stains, and splits from historical folding, some repaired. Edges pinked, typical of silk playbills of the period. Despite condition issues, the piece remains intact and visually strong. Collation and Bibliography; Single silk broadside Approximate size 540 x 210 mm Letterpress printed on silk Pinked edges No standard bibliographic reference Ephemeral theatrical printing rarely recorded in institutional catalogues Why It Matters; Silk playbills represent a higher tier of theatrical ephemera, produced in limited numbers as commemorative souvenirs rather than disposable notices. Their survival rate is significantly lower than paper equivalents. This example is particularly notable for its early date, Stratford association, and named patronage under Lady Skipwith. It provides direct insight into provincial theatre, benefit culture, and performance programming in early nineteenth century England. For collectors, it offers a rare combination of textile printing, theatre history, and display presence. Offered by Atlas Rare Books, specialists in rare and antiquarian books.

Add to basketCondition: Good. 1st Edition. An unusual and highly collectible silk theatre playbill from the Theatre Royal Canterbury, printed for a benefit performance for Mrs Dowton on 22 November 1849. Produced on silk rather than paper, this piece was intended as a keepsake rather than a disposable notice, preserving a rare snapshot of pr…ovincial theatre culture in Victorian England. Description; Single sheet playbill printed on silk, with bold typographic layout in black ink. Headed Theatre Royal Canterbury, announcing a benefit night for Mrs Dowton under the patronage of the Catch Club. Programme includes The Wonder A Woman Keeps a Secret followed by the farce Frederick of Prussia or The Monarch and the Mimic. Cast list and performers detailed throughout. Printer identified as Henry Ward of Mercery Lane, Canterbury. The silk shows creasing, light staining, and wear consistent with age and handling, but remains intact and highly presentable. Blue edging visible, suggesting period mounting or reinforcement, typical of survival examples. Collation and Bibliography; Single silk broadside Folio format Letterpress printed on silk Ephemeral theatre keepsake No standard bibliographic reference, such items rarely catalogued due to format and survival rate Why It Matters; Silk playbills occupy a distinct and more valuable category than standard paper broadsides. They were produced in limited numbers for special occasions, often benefit nights or notable performances, and were kept as souvenirs rather than discarded. As a result, survival rates are low and demand among collectors of theatre history and textile ephemera is strong. This example is particularly desirable due to its provincial origin, named performers, and dual programme structure. It represents not just a record of performance, but a physical artefact of Victorian social and cultural life, bridging theatre, print, and textile history. Offered by Atlas Rare Books, specialists in rare and antiquarian books.
