Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj) Mach-Tey (illustrator). First Edition Thus. [light wear at spine ends, very slight bumping to upper corners; the jacket is just lightly edgeworn]. (photographic endpapers) Photoplay edition, a tie-in with the 1934 Paramount film, already the third screen version of this popular story (although if you want to get technical about it, this one was purportedly based on the 1904 play, co-written by Ms. Rice with Anne Crawford Flexner, rather than on her 1901 novel, although it hardly matters. To the extent that the film is memorable, it's due not to the somewhat bathetic travails of Mrs. Wiggs but rather to the comic-romantic interplay between ZaSu Pitts (as Miss Tabitha Hazy) and W.C. Fields as her mail-order suitor (with the very Fieldsian name of C. Ellsworth Stubbins). By 1934, the Photoplay Edition as a literary sub-sub-genre was well on the decline, Depression-Era economics having eliminated the bound-in stills in favor of (as here) photo-illustrated endpapers. (Fields, if that's who you're interested in, appears clearly in three of the 16 different scene stills that are used in the endpaper montages, and at a blurry distance in two others.).
