L'auteur commence par discuter de la nature de la musique, souvent perçue à tort…comme un art purement conventionnel. Il souligne que la musique, contrairement à d'autres formes d'art, ne peut pas s'appuyer sur des processus extérieurs, mais doit plutôt émerger du sens musical inné de l'homme. Weber critique l'idée que la musique est sujette aux caprices de la mode, affirmant que les chefs-d'uvre de compositeurs comme Beethoven et Mozart conservent leur valeur intemporelle. Il explore ensuite les erreurs de jugement causées par l'ignorance, l'habitude et les préjugés, en soulignant comment ces facteurs influencent la réception des uvres musicales. L'auteur aborde également la question de la musique imitative, souvent considérée comme inférieure, mais qui a néanmoins été utilisée par de nombreux compositeurs.
