Modern full calf binding signed "T.C.W. 2001", sides with gilt fillet and dotted borders, central decorative lozenge, spine with prettily gilt decorated compartments, and gilt lettered. Engraved frontispiece, large folding map and 35 double page plates, title page vignette and 109 illustrations in the text, just lacking the portrait of Nieuhof and the portrait of Colbert (the dedicatee) as usual. First published in Dutch, 1665; first English edition 1669. Marginal dampstain to first few leaves, generally a very good copy. First edition in Latin, beautifully illustrated, of Nieuhof's account of his travels in China between 1655 and 1657, one of the most important early modern non-Jesuit studies. Following service in Brazil with the Dutch West India Company in the 1640s, Jan Nieuhof (1618 1672) joined the Dutch East India Company (or VOC) in 1650 and was stationed for several years in Batavia (Jakarta), where he was eventually appointed steward of the embassy in 1654. The following year he served on one of the embassies sent by the VOC to Peking (Beijing) with the intention of convincing the Qing emperor to open trade relations on the south coast following the VOC's failed attempt to end the Portuguese monopoly on trade to Macao. Leaving Canton (Guangzhou), the embassy travelled northwards through Jiangxsi, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Hebei provinces, reaching Peking in July 1656 before embarking upon their return trip in October of the same year: in total, the journey stretched almost 1500 miles, and although unsuccessful in discussing trade arrangements with the emperor, they did gain permission to return to the court every eight years. Nieuhof compiled his notes and sketches from the embassy into the present work, the first part describing his journey and the second containing a general description of the Chinese empire. Though prepared upon a brief visit home in 1658, it was not published until 1665; the first edition, in Dutch, was swiftly followed by translations into French (1665), German (1666), and English (1669). This Latin translation, published in 1668, was the work of the notable German biblical scholar, historian, and Adamite alchemist Georg Horn (1620 1670), who himself had a long-standing interest in China and particularly Chinese history (see Weststeijn, 'Spinoza sinicus: An Asian Paragraph in the History of the Radical Enlightenment' in Journal of the History of Ideas 68, no.4 (2007), pp.537-561). The Latin edition (like the Dutch, French, and German versions) was published by Jacob van Meurs, noted as a publisher and engraver of heavily illustrated works, especially in the fields of geography and travel. Van Meurs commissioned almost 150 engravings after Nieuhof's drawings, illustrating the work with images of Chinese people, customs and fashions, architecture and infrastructure, towns and landscapes, and flora and fauna. The illustrations have been credited with a significant influence on western depictions of China and on the development of a European taste for chinoiserie in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (see Jing Sun, The Illusion of Verisimilitude: Johan Nieuhof's Images of China (Leiden University, 2013)). Add to basketFirst edition, presented by the author to Bruno Navarra, the editor of the Shanghai newspaper Ostasiatische Lloyd. Issued in the wake of the opening of Chongqing to foreign trade, de Villard's impressive atlas was the first detailed plan of the river's 1,500-mile course from Sichuan to the sea. WorldCat records only nine institutional copies. A rather enigmatic figure, de Villard (1860-1904) spent his China career in the employ of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service. He is credited with several other maps, including A Map of the Shooting Districts lying between Shanghai and Wuhu (1893), and is also known for the controversial "coiling dragon" postage stamps. The atlas begins in Shanghai, the first sheet covering the stretch from the mouth to Fushan and marking lights, beacons, buoys, pagodas, and temple. Inset plans show the region's broader river system and the course from Zhenjiang to Yangzhou. Subsequent sheets follow the Yangtse past Mud Fort and onwards to Nanjing and Wuhu, and some, such as Sheet V (Jiujiang to Hirado Island), give more topographic detail to help navigators. Sheet VII has an inset of the famous Dongting Lake, a flood basin of the river, and Sheet XII charts, in three sections, the whole 4,000 miles from mouth to source. The final sheet comprises plans of eight major cities (Shanghai, Nanjing, Hankow, Zhenjiang, Jiujiang, Yichang, Wuhu, and Chongqing). Resident in China for over 20 years, Navarra (1850-1911) ran the Ostasiatische Lloyd (founded 1899) from the early 1890s to 1900, helping grow it into the premier German-language newssheet in Asia. The title page is inscribed to Navarra in German, perhaps in the author's hand. Rather than sign his name, de Villard has added his blue Shanghai ink stamp. Cordier 126. Folio. With 13 double-page photolithographed bilingual charts mounted on guards, letterpress title page in red and black. Housed in original brown pebble-grain half cloth portfolio, brown pebbled sides, front cover lettered in gilt and red. Light finger-soiling, maps well preserved, title page scuffed and rubbed, portfolio worn, chip at fore edge of front cover: a very good copy.

Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper verso, "Mr Charles A. Woollett, with the author's compliments. 23.IX.11". During the Taiping Rebellion, Hong Xiuquan erected in Nanjing a stone tablet carved with the Beatitudes found in the Gospel of Matthew. Although the tablet was destroyed by Qing government forces, a rubbing was taken by missionaries and brought to London. This rubbing is reproduced as the frontispiece and is the primary source for this cross-cultural historical and linguistic study. The author (b. 1836), a member of the China Society, was an expert on Chinese printing. At the 1877 Caxton Quadricentennial Celebration, he gave demonstrations of Chinese woodblock printing on his stand and exhibited Chinese and Japanese rare books, types, and woodblocks. The recipient is likely the antiques dealer who traded in Rochester in the early 20th century. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece showing Nanking Monument of the Beatitudes, 5 plates (4 half-tone, 1 colour), illustrations and Chinese characters in text. Original black cloth, front cover lettered in gilt with central gilt Chinese character ("fu"), black surface-paper endpapers. Pencilled notes in contemporary hand on "notes" leaves at end. Spine and extremities with some wear, especially at spine ends, foxing internally: very good.

The letter is dated December 10th, 1929, and typed on letterhead for "The Nationalist Government of the Republic of China. / Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Labour / Nanking, China". It is addressed to Murphy at 202 Szechuen Road, Shanghai. The letter appears to be a response to a request for payment by Murphy, as he had been contracted to build the capital city for the Republic of China at the location of the ancient city of Nanking. Kung smoothes the waters, speaking about the "valuable services to the Government"; and how Sun Fo, the head of the Capital Planning Commission must handle the settlement. Several lines of flattery are prelude to a refusal to pay his fees, "Due to civil strife, the coffers of the Government have been seriously drained; and the construction programs will have to be delayed." Murphy was a graduate of Yale Architecture school and began practicing with Tracey & Startwout in New York in 1900. In 1907, he & Richard Henry Dana Jr. went into partnership, their firm with a specialty in educational campuses. Over his career, Murphy made eight trips to China, the first in 1914 and the longest in 1931-35. In 1919, he designed the campus of the Shanghai University. In 1924, he went on to practice independently and in 1928, he was hired by Chiang Kai Shek to design a modern capital for China at the location of the ancient city of Nanjing. (Wikipedia) H.H. Kung was a confidant and brother-in-law of Chiang Kai Shek, and brother in law of Sun-Yat-Sen. He was an economics graduate of Yale in 1906. When the new Nationalist government (ROC) came to power in 1928, he was named Minister of Industry and Commerce. in 1935, he was appointed governor of the Central Bank of China. In 1938, he briefly succeeded Chiang Kai Shek as Nationalist Chinese Premier when Chiang resigned to fight the second Sino/Japanese War. 8 1/2 x 11", typescript, signed H. H. Kung, with early underlining of significant passages. Paper somewhat tanned, with residue of glue on the verso around the edges, causing some marking to show through. Interesting insight into the American relationship with the Republic of China government of Chiang Kai Shek.

The Treaty ofNanking (also spelt Nanjing in pinyin) was a treaty signed on 29 August1842 to mark the end of the First Opium War (1839-42) between the UnitedKingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Qing Dynasty of China. Itwas the first of what the Chinese called the unequal treaties becauseBritain had no obligations in return. In the wake of China's militarydefeat, with British warships poised to attack the city, representativesfrom the British and Qing Empires negotiated aboard HMS Cornwallisanchored at Nanking. On 29 August 1842, British representative Sir HenryPottinger and Qing representatives, Qiying, Elepoo, and Niujian, signedthe treaty.
