Includes pictorial inset of the Castello Nuovo and the Castello St. Elmo as well as a view of Naples from the Hill of Posilipo. The map shows incredible detail throughout, noting streets, important buildings, plazas, and other topographical features. Relief in rendered by hachure. The map is in good condition with minor toning and a small chip to lower left corner. The "Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge" (SDUK), founded in 1826 at the initiative of British lord Henry Peter Brougham, aimed to distribute affordable, high-quality educational materials to the working and middle classes. Despite ties to prestigious publishers like Baldwin and Cradock, Chapman and Hall, and Charles Knight, SDUK closed in 1848 due to financial challenges. It achieved renown for its exceptional atlases, notably a comprehensive series of maps initially issued individually and later consolidated into a groundbreaking world atlas under Chapman and Hall. SDUK maps are celebrated for their accuracy, detail, and accessibility, representing a pinnacle of 19th-century English mass-market cartography.

Condition: Fine. This originally hand-colored engraving is from "The Complete Atlas of Modern, Classical and Celestial Maps, together with Plans of the Principal Cities of the World". The work was published in 1857 by Edward Stanford for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. --- The work is in very good to excellent condition.
