Whilst in Barbados, Hughes developed the idea of publishing a book on the island's natural history. In 1743 he visited London with the intention of promoting this work and ingratiated himself with the leading scientists of the day, men such as Sir Hans Sloane and Martin Folkes. Before returning home, he had arranged for the leading artist George Dionysius Ehret to prepare plates for his book. See ODNB.

Hardback. Condition: Good. First Edition. [17], ii-vii, [2], 2-250, *251-*254, 251-314pp, [20]. Slightly later half calf and marbled paper over boards, smooth back, divided into seven panels by gilt rules, title label to second panel. Outer joints slightly split and repaired with coloured Japanese tissue, inner joints also strengthened with Japanese tissue, slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally some light browning and occasional foxing throughout, map and several plates with off-setting, couple of small nicks to page edges, small tear to map. Complete with double-page map and thirty, (actually thirty-one, with two copies of plate 23), full-page uncoloured engravings, twenty-two of which are botanical, by G. D. Ehret (For Ehret, see Alexander, page 321) and G. Bickham (for Bickham, see Alexander, pages 115-116). Alexander, in his piece on Ehret, notes that only thirteen of the plates were designed by him, and only ten were actually engraved by him, with five being engraved by James Mynde, (see Alexandere, pages 640-641), four by Bickham, and one by William Austin (see Alexander, pages 62-64). The map is by Thomas Jeffreys, (see Worms and Baynton-Williams, pages 347-351). Hunt notes that this book "is one to place beside Catesby's 'Natural History', which also gave some account of West Indian names, with similar local names. Hughes had an advantage over Catesby in that a majority of the Barbados plates were drawn by Ehret . It is the model work by the colonial parson who knows his poets and would know all he can of the flora and fauna among which he has come to dwell". Armorial bookplate of James Dickson Esqr. of Ednam in the County of Roxburgh; early ink ownership inscription at head of title: Kelso Library. A very good copy. First edition. "Not a great deal is known concerning Griffith Hughes. He was born perhaps in Merionethshire about 1707 or 1708 and graduated B.A. and M.A. from St John's College, Oxford, in 1748. Yet just two years later, while rector of St Lucy's parish in the north of Barbados, he brought out his Natural History of the island. At that time he was a member of the Royal Society and obviously a competent botanist. . . The book is one to place beside Catesby's Natural History (1731[-47]), which also gave some account of West Indian plants, in some instances the same ones, with similar local names. Hughes had an advantage over Catesby in that a majority of the Barbados plates were drawn by Ehret, whereas just three of Catesby's are from that gifted artist's hand. Probably several of the unsigned Barbados plates are also by Ehret, for he may have signed only those that he felt were good. . . The book has many charming features. Not often does a work on natural history contain an index to 'Texts of Scripture Cited or Illustrated'. It is the model work by the colonial parson who knows his poets and would know all he can of the flora and fauna among which he has come to dwell. Both in style and in philosophy he is a man of his century" âÂÂ" Hunt. Women and their use of time are commented on by Hughes, in a passage where he also discusses the function of nature painting using shells: "In the section of his Natural History of Barbados (1750) devoted to shells [pp.267-286], Griffith Hughes defended the inclusion of women in his audience by stating: 'I have heard several of the Fair Sex, who are fond of Shell-work, frequently ridiculed, as wasting their Time in a trifling and useless Manner.' On the contrary, he argued, configuring shells into designs not only answered Joseph Addison's idea of 'The Beautiful,' but it particularly suited the 'Genius of Women,' who have a facility for putting 'Shape and Colour artificially . . . together.' Moreover, it was so much better than 'murdering their Time in Gaming!' . . . In these remarks [and others], Hughes included women in his audience and in the heterosocial scene of natural history, yet he delineated for them a distinct relationship to nature and to knowledge, associatin.

First Edition. "(BARBADOS) HUGHES, Griffith. The Natural History of Barbados. In Ten Books. London: for the Author, 1750. Folio (9-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches), contemporary full calf rebacked in calf-gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine label; pp. [20], v, [1], 314, [15]. $5500.First edition of this important work on the flora and fauna of Barbados, with folding map of the island by Thomas Jefferys and 30 folio engraved plates, 12 after renowned botanical artist G.D. Ehret, one of the greatest botanical painters of the 18th century."The book is handsomely printed, and the plates are finely executed from drawings by Ehret" (Sabin). "Not a great deal is known concerning Griffith Hughes While rector of St. Lucy's parish in the north of Barbados, he brought out his Natural History of the island. At that time he was a member of the Royal Society and obviously a competent botanist. The book is one to place beside Catesby's Natural History (1731-[47]), which also gave some account of West Indian plants, in some instances the same ones, with similar local names. Probably several of the unsigned Barbados plates are also by Ehret, for he may have signed only those that he felt were good" (Hunt). Hughes' Natural History has been credited as the first book to describe grapefruit and to coin the term "yellow fever." Of the 30 plates, 22 are of botanical subjects, by Ehret and Bickham, engraved by Austen, Bickham and Mynde; the others depict fish, crustaceans, shellfish, and a "View of Hackelton's Cliff." Each plate is dedicated to a patron or subscriber and includes that person's name and coat of arms. With engraved vignette headpieces and elaborate woodcut initials. With unnumbered four-page Addenda, sometimes found at rear, bound at front; with ten-page List of Subscribers, with errata on last page of Subscribers. Of the approximately 1000 copies printed, about one-fifth were issued in large-paper format; the present copy is on standard folio-size paper. Sabin 33582. Great Flower Books, 104. Hunt 536. Nissen 950. Wood, 393. Folding map trimmed a little close, affecting border on left margin. Plates and text generally clean, only mildly toned at times; contemporary calf boards nicely restored. A lovely copy.".

Folio (16 x 10 1/4 inches). 10pp. list of subscribers, 15-line errata printed on verso of final page of preface. 30 engraved plates (12 after G.D. Ehret, others by Mynde, G. NISSEN BBI 950. Ripley 140. WOOD 393. Calmann Ehret: Flower Painter extraordinary, p. 67. Large paper copy of the first edition of the most important early botanical and dendrological work on Barbados, with plates by Ehret, among the greatest of all botanical painters. About one-fifth of the 1,000 subscribers received large paper copies. Hughes published The Natural History at his own expense, and writes in a pleasing factual style. He notes in the preface that everything included was either observed by the author himself or "had from Persons of known Veracity." Despite the title, the work is largely devoted to the botany and dendrology of the island. Of the 12 "books" or chapters (not 10 as on the title), 8 are dedicated to trees, shrubs, and plants. The plants are ordered into chapters according to physical appearance: Nuciferous (nut-bearing), Pomiferous (fruit-bearing), Pruniferous (bearing plum-like fruit), etc. Hughes, who was rector of St. Lucy's parish, Barbados, and a fellow of the Royal Society, gives a physical description of each plant, followed by notes on the edibility (or inedibility) of the fruit or nuts and their uses, both commercially and medicinally. Among the most noted descriptions in the book is his account of the "forbidden fruit" of the island, i.e., among the earliest descriptions of the grapefruit. Following p.314 is an interesting 7pp. glossary of "Botanical and Technical Terms" supplied largely by "the accurate Mr. Miller of Chelsea" (presumably Philip Miller, author, foreman o.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Printed for the Author, 1750. First edition, large paper issue. Folio (15 3/4" x 10 1/2", 404mm x 260mm). With 31 engraved plates; a double-page engraved map of Barbados, and 30 engraved plates of fruits, flowers, and marine life. Bound in contemporary mottled calf. Decorative gilt border with red morocco and gilt armorial inlays at the corners. Rebacked with the original backstrip laid down. On the spine, gilt lettering and six raised bands. Dentelles inside and red speckled edges to the text block. Extremities and hinges worn, tears to the spine. Foxing and offsetting throughout. Griffith Hughes (1707?-after 1750) was a Welsh naturalist and clergyman. Hughes was sent to Pennsylvania to lead several Welsh congregations in the colony. In 1736, he was assigned to St. Lucy's parish in Barbados, where he studied plants and wildlife. Over twelve years residing on the island, Hughes developed a thorough understanding of its trees and plants. The Natural History of Barbados was the first book to describe the grapefruit, calling it the "Forbidden-Fruit-Tree" and to coin the phrase "yellow fever." The work was printed in both large and small paper copies. The volume contains a list of subscribers, including the Prince of Wales, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Duke of Orleans. The position of the list of subscribers varies between copies with this one placed after the dedication leaf. Each plate is dedicated to a patron or subscriber, including a coat of arms. There is a head-engraving of Bridge-Town and woodcuts throughout. As a religious man, Hughes introduced some sacred texts in his descriptions of the flora and fauna. His cartographer was Thomas Jeffreys (1719-1771), geographer to the Prince of Wales, with engravings after art by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1710-1770). Hunt asserts that "the book is one to place beside Catesby's Natural History (1731[-47])." After returning from the Americas, Hughes received his BA from St. John's College, Oxford in 1748, and was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society. Although he was praised by Linnaeus and multiple sources, some have questioned his accuracy as a botanist. Hunt: 536. Nissen: 950. Pritzel: 4319. Sabin: 33582.
