Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center, this catalog presents the work of Chinese ink-wash painter Liu Chang-han (Charles Liu, b. 1947). Essays address the development of traditional Chinese painting in the context of globalization and modernity, with discussions of Liu's innovative approach to shan shui (mountain and water) subjects. Includes sections: Preface; Pioneering the Art of Traditional Chinese Painting in the Current World of Globalization; Fading Records, Art by Charles Liu; Scattered Cultural Memory; Plates; Contemporary Perspectives on Ink Wash Painting Aesthetics; and a Chronology of Charles Liu (Liu Chang-han). Features major series such as Snow Mountains (2008-2014), The White Village (2014), Color Terraced Field (2011), and Yellow Leaf (2011). Liu was born in Shanghai in 1947 and trained in both Chinese ink painting and Western art before emigrating to the United States in 1978. His work bridges Eastern and Western traditions, reinterpreting classical ink painting through a modern global lens. Signed by Author.
