The "Y Scheme" in the Royal Navy refers to the Y Service, a vital World War II-era network of signals intelligence collection sites, while the Upper Yardman Scheme is a separate program for Ratings to become Officers. The Royal Navy was a key part of the Y Service, which intercepted enemy communications to provide intelligence for operations, including the crucial decryption of Enigma at Bletchley Park. The Y Service, established during WWI and continued through WWII, was a network of interception sites known as Y-stations. The Royal Navy played a crucial role in the Y Service, using its Y-stations to collect signals intelligence that supported the war effort. This network's vital work provided intelligence to Allied commanders, including the interception of encrypted German communications that were sent to Bletchley Park for decryption. Ref TT 1.
