Condition: Good+. Cover art ('signed') Plourde. (illustrator). Signed and inscribed by Haldeman ('for Jeri Joe Haldeman') on the title page. Second title in the short-lived Attar the Merman series, a pulp-style ecological adventure featuring a genetically engineered amphibian hero battling villains who threaten oceanic life. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with even age-toning. Modest shelf handling wear. No spine crease. Used bookstore stamp inside front cover. A strong copy with vivid color and minimal surface wear. Joe Haldeman, later acclaimed for The Forever War (1974, Hugo and Nebula Awards), wrote the Attar the Merman books early in his career under the name Robert Graham. These novels combined Cold War thriller elements with ecological and evolutionary themes, anticipating later environmental science fiction. War of Nerves pits Attar against a villain threatening to unleash nerve gas across the Caribbean. The cover artist, Plourde, contributed stylized figure work to Pocket Books during the early 1970s. Subjects: Joe Haldeman, Robert Graham pseudonym, Attar the Merman series, Pocket Books, pulp science fiction, ecological fiction, Environmental Thriller, Science Fiction, Adventure. From the estate of Jeri Kandel of Sarasota, Florida. Jeri, an aspiring Sci-Fi/Horror author, was active in the Florida West Coast Sci-FiFantasy community. She served as a volunteer for DragonCon in Atlanta and other Florida West Coast and Orlando conventions, and as an active member of ASFA (Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists), through which she acquired many remarkable autographs.

From the publisher: "NERVES OF STEEL is the captivating true story of Tammie Jo Shults's remarkable life -- from growing up the daughter of a humble rancher, to breaking through gender barriers as one of the Navy's first female F/A 18 Hornet pilots, to safely landing the severely crippled Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 and helping save the lives of 148 people. Tammie Jo Shults has spent her entire life loving the skies. Though the odds were against her, she became one of the few female fighter pilots in the Navy. In 1994, after serving her country honorably for eight years, Tammie Jo left the Navy and joined Southwest Airlines in the early 1990's. On April 17, 2018, Tammie Jo was called to service once again. Twenty minutes into a routine domestic flight, Captain Shults was faced with the unthinkable -- a catastrophic engine failure in the Boeing 737 caused an explosion that punctured hydraulic lines and severed fuel lines, tearing away sections of the plane, puncturing a window, and taking a woman's life. Captain Shults and her first officer, Darren Ellisor, struggled to stabilize the aircraft. Drawing deeply from her well of experience, Tammie Jo was able to wrestle the severely damaged 737 safely to the ground. Not originally scheduled for that flight, there is no doubt God had prepared her and placed her right where she needed to be that day.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. Add to basketChristopher Wren (illustrator). WILLIS, Thomas (1621-1675); FEINDEL, William [Editor] (1918-2014). The Anatomy of the Brain and Nerves Tercentenary Edition 1664-1964. Facsimile of the Anatomy of the Brain and the Description and Use of the Nerves in The Remaining Medical Works of that Famous and Renowned Physician Dr. Thomas Willis. Montreal: McGill University Press 1965. 1st Edition of the Tercentenary Edition [Includes an introduction in Vol I and Vol II contains the facsimile of the 1681 edition, Englished by Samuel Pordage, Esquire]. Folio (320x205mm), xx, 104pp + xii, 192pp, [24 pp. index & table]. Good. Original stiffened tan paper covering with red lettering on the boards. Black and white crest on the slipcase. Pages edges are uncut. The copies of the books are in very good condition, but I have downgraded the overall rating to 'good' taking into account the condition of the slipcase which is structurally sound but significantly discoloured due to foxing or damp staining. This is present on the boards of volume 1, but is largely absent on volume II. Aside from the discoloration, the slipcase also has some black marks and surface damage on the top edge where a sticker has been removed. However, it feels strong and stable. Structurally the books are sound and in good condition, the textblock is stable and square. There is a small amount of foxing on the first free endpage of volume 1 and none at all in volume II - internally the books are otherwise clean. This copy has a long dedication on the front free endpage of volume I to "Major Bill Bacon and Dawn Bacon" who unfortunately we have not been able to identify. The dedication is written by Canadian Neuroscientist William Feindel (1918-2014), it appears this copy has been given as a gift to The Bacons when Feindel and Dr Frank Rose visited the UK for the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate "The Castle" as the birthplace of Thomas Willis in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. Feindel was a Neurosurgeon and Professor who specialised in brain imaging, when he wrote this dedication in 1994 he was Chancellor of Acadia University, Nova Scotia. These volumes contain an introduction to Willis' famous work "The Anatomy Of The Brain And Nervous System" and a biography of Willis (Vol 1) and a facsimile reproduction of the 1681 edition of the work in Vol II. Willis was a founding member of The Royal Society and physician to Charles I.His work on anatomy, physiology and psychiatry is still studied to this day. In "The Anatomy Of The Brain And Nervous System", Willis gives "the most complete and accurate account of the nervous system which had hitherto appeared" and was the first to use the term "neurology". The beautiful plates in the work were drawn by Christopher Wren. Copies of the original work and even slightly later editions are incredibly rare and very expensive, so we were delighted to find this facsimile reproduction made in 1964 to mark the 300 year anniversary of the first edition. It is a beautiful piece of work which, in the first volume, provides the reader with an excellent depth of context which is fascinating and informative.
