Condition: Good. New York,: Dell Publishing Co., 1965. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Stated First printing-Laurel Edition- Tight and unmarked with light crease on cover.More than a half-century ago the naturalist Farley Mowat was sent to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. Mowat's account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone -- studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for the wolves (who were of no threat to caribou or man) -- is today celebrated as a classic of nature writing, at once a tale of remarkable adventures and indelible record of myths and magic of wolves. 176 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Never Cry Wolf, Mowat, Farley. Published by McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1963. First Edition, First Printing. 8vo up to 9½" tall., 247pp. Light blue boards with red-orange spine title and wolf illustration. In near fine condition with tiny name in ink to free endpaper. Second state dustjacket appears as near fine, with a taped-on plastic protective cover. In 1948-1949, the Dominion Wildlife Service assigned the author to investigate the cause of declining caribou populations in Keewatin Barren Lands, north of Churchill, Manitoba and to determine whether wolves are to blame for the shortage. The book is Mowat's account of his observation of the wolves. "We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be - the mythologized epitome of a savage, ruthless killer - which is, in reality, no more than the reflected image of ourself." ?from the Preface. Mowat's book has received criticism relating to the veracity of his work and its conclusions but has been credited for dramatically improving the public image of the wolf. Never Cry Wolf was adapted into a film of the same name in 1983. Farley McGill Mowat, OC (1921-2014), was a Canadian writer and environmentalist. His works were translated into 52 languages, and he sold more than 17 million books.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st printing of the first Canadian hardcover edition with the original and second issue dust jackets. The front panel of the original jacket features a charming illustration of a wolf with his arm around the shoulders of the author, who is wearing a parka. Also included is the second issue jacket - orange with the author's photo on the front panel. Mowat objected to the original jacket, hence the second issue and the scarcity of the original. Note: one book. Full gray cloth with white end papers and red titles. The very good book is tight with no markings by a previous owner or retailer. The top corner of the front board is rubbed, and the heel and crown of the book's spine have softened. Tanning to the exposed page edges. The front free and final paste downs and free end papers are foxed. Foxing is less apparent on the surface of both boards. The text is free from foxing with the exception of a small stain at the top corner of pages 214 - 221. The top corner of the first preliminary page through pg. 9 of the text is softly turned. The first issue illustrated jacket is fine. It is remarkably bright, crisp and well-preserved, because it was inside and protected by the 2nd issue jacket. There is a tiny closed tear in the top edge of the front flap with evidence of foxing only on the reverse side of the back panel. This example of the commonly found 2nd issue jacket with the author's photo on the front panel is very good. We've handled many copies of this book, and this 2nd issue jacket is above average in its preservation. Just paper with no laminate protection, there is rubbing along the spine and the folds. Shelf wear to the surface of both panels and wear resulting in color loss at the tips of the folds. A few chips have been lost from the crown of the orange jacket's spine, and the heel of the spine has softened. Tiny closed tear in the top edge of the front flap (which corresponds to the first issue jacket), and the top corner of the back flap is softly turned. In 1948-49, the Dominion of Canada Wildlife Service assigned Mowat to investigate the cause of declining caribou populations and determine whether wolves were to blame for the shortage. Upon finding his quarry near Nueltin Lake, Mowat discovered that rather than being wanton killers of caribou, the wolves subsisted on small mammals such as rodents and hares, "even choosing them over caribou when available." He concluded that "We have doomed the wolf not for what it is but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be: the mythologized epitome of a savage, ruthless killer, which is, in reality, not more than the reflected image of ourselves. We have made it the scape-wolf for our own sins." Mowat's research methods came under close scrutiny in later years, but Never Cry Wolf remains an important contribution to the literature of wildlife preservation and environmentalism.
