In 1776 he entered into holy orders. He wrote for periodicals and magazines while serving as a curate in Liverpool. Following his move to London in 1782, he continued to advance his ecclesiastical career while publishing essays, poetry, and sermons. He also contributed to Biographia Britannica and served as editor from 1795. Voracious study allowed Gregory to develop detailed knowledge of a wide range of topics, including the arts and sciences, commerce, manufactures, and political institutions.Gregory's Dictionary was reissued in several subsequent editions following his death in 1808, including an expanded and revised three-volume version titled A New & Complete Dictionary of Arts & Sciences, Including the Latest Improvement & Discovery and the Present State of Every Branch of Human Knowledge, published in Philadelphia in 1816.

Half leather bindings of the time with 5 raised bands. Second edition. English-language edition. With engraved frontispiece and 128 (of 150) engraved plates on various fields of science and their instruments as well as cultural history (including anatomy, architecture, astronomy, barometers, botany, chemistry, surgery, electricity, emblematics, fencing, geometry, heraldry, entomology, compasses, mechanics, music, navigation, timekeeping, zoology, and more). The work was issued in separate fascicles and could be purchased successively, or else complete in two or, depending on preference, three volumes. Bindings rubbed and scuffed, outer joints cracked, boards loosened. Lacking nearly 300 pages and 22 plates. Pages and plates in places somewhat darkened and foxed, a few leaves with darkened waterstain in the lower margin (not affecting text), some leaves with marginal flaws (few margins partly repaired with paper). Plates frequently with slight offsetting onto the facing pages. Overall still a good copy, the copper engravings themselves in clear, strong impressions.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. Full calf leather with raised bands to spine and a black and red title box with gilt lettering. Book is tight and square, despite size (9" x 11", 1,000+ pp) and relatively sharp-cornered given age and size. Not ex-library, from a private owner in Columbia Falls, Maine whose n…ame is written faintly in pencil on FFEP. Leather is somewhat worn at the corners, edges and front, but no cracks or breaks anywhere. Pages are generall foxed throughout however almost all plates - 54 of them - are mostly free of foxing or spotting. Some long ago moisture damage to rear of book - some pages are stained. "Second American, from the Last London Edition, considerably Improved and Augmented" Quite scarce - plates are worth the price of admission alone.

Gilt Lettering on Black grounds in 2nd Compartments (2 missing). All Page edges Marbled. 9 7/8" Tall. Some wear to leather (see photos). Hinges sound and Bindings firm. No inscriptions. 3/4 leather. Condition: Good. Good overall; leather edges and corners scuffed/rubbed/bumped; head of spine chipped/frayed on most volumes, as are the foot of spine and the forecorners on some volumes; powdery red rot to leather in worn areas; marbled paper worn at edges of covers; front hinge starting on vols V and XV, else all…hinges sound; owner stamp to front endpapers. Interior contents are pristine, with very mild tanning to pages, which are otherwise clean and bright; all folding maps in perfect condition. Still a handsome set, bound in 3/4 red leather; raised bands, black decorations, and gilt titling on spines; matching marbled paper to covers and endpapers; top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges marbled. The five Supplement volumes are a later set of articles alphabetized from A to Z independently of the first 10 volumes. This is a large and heavy set, so expect an increase in the shipping price.
