Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Condition is Very Good in a hard cover. DJ is Very Good. Moderate overall wear and foxing to page ends. Beekmantown, New York: Forest Frontier to Farm Community and was written by Philip L. White. It was published by the University of Texas Press, or…iginally in 1979. Summary The book is a detailed community history that examines the transformation of a specific portion of the American wilderness in upstate New York into a settled farming community during the early national period. Philip L. White's study draws three major conclusions, which challenge some common historical narratives about the American frontier: Settler Status: The initial generation of settlers was relatively high in social and economic status due to the economic advantages of the frontier. However, as frontier conditions disappeared, the second generation of settlers had an appreciably lower status. Inequality: White rejects the romantic idea that the frontier fostered equality. Instead, he argues that the economic opportunities present on the frontier fostered inequality. Jacksonian Era: In contrast to some revisionist arguments, White affirms that the Jacksonian period in Beekmantown does indeed warrant characterization as the "era of the common man". The book is recognized as a model in community history due to its prodigious scholarship and the universal applications of its findings.
