Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A somewhat unconventional history of Spanish influence in North and South America, timed to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage to the New World, and written by a Mexican novelist rather than a professional historian. From the dust jacket flaps: "Using the illuminating metaphor of mirrors, inspired by mirrors found in ancient burial caches in the Americas, Fuentes challenges us to think in new ways about how a national character is formed, how a stereotype evolves, and what continuities are discovered when a human community truly understands its roots. Illustrated with more than 160 stunning drawings, paintings, and photographs, The Buried Mirror celebrates of culture of enormous wealth and diversity, as Carlos Fuentes fulfills the poet Pablo Neruda's resounding cry, 'I am here to sing this history.'" 7¼ x 10 inches, 399 pages. Both book and dust jacket in very good condition. Half-title page contains an author's inscription that is very hard to read - something like "To my friend Lennie Masterson [?], after an enjoyable afternoon. Carlos Fuentes 1992." Author's signature nothing but a few illegible pen strokes. Inscribed by Author(s).

Signed by the Author. keywords: Latin America Translated History Mexico. DESCRIPTION - IIn his introduction to this passionate history of Spain and the Spanish-speaking peoples of the Americas, Carlos Fuentes asks the question: What do we really have to celebrate of Columbus's historic voyage to the New World? After all, the quincentennial of the 'discovery of America' finds Latin American republics in a state of deep crisis, with inflation, unemployment, and excessive foreign debt threatening their still precarious economic and political institutions. From the mysterious cave drawings at Altamira to the explosive graffiti on the walls of East Los Angeles, images of Spain and the Americas speak to us of the great variety of Spanish culture. Carlos Fuentes knows this culture intimately. Combining a sophisticated perspective on world events and a novelist's eye for irony and metaphor, he weaves a historical narrative of dazzling color and vibrancy. Sweeping across centuries of tumultuous history, Fuentes gives new life to monarchs and conquistadors, to Indian cultures and revolutions, and finally to modern-day Spain, Latin America, and the Hispanic United States, History and its players come alive on every page, in the stories of the famous and the little-known, the heroes and tyrants, martyrs and saints, virgins and kings. Using the illuminating metaphor of mirrors, inspired by mirrors found in ancient burial caches in the Americas, Fuentes challenges us to think in new ways about how a national character is formed, how a stereotype evolves, and what continuities are discovered when a human community truly understands its roots. inventory #24808. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Association copy, inscribed to fellow poet Leslie Scalapino who, as founder and editor of O Books (in Oakland), published McClures Plum Stones: Cartoons of No Heaven in 2002. Scalapino was considered a language poet, but felt her closest ties were to the Beats. The inscription reads: "Aug 14, 2001, For Leslie, 'Stars are born / on high cliffs / in Nebulae.' {pg. 49} xx grahhr, Michael." His usual sort of growl-kiss. Scalapino wrote of McClures work, "He transposes (enacts) the (comic book bubble) language of his poetry theater; it is a mode of theater in both his poetry and his plays in both, the distinction between surface and intuitive apprehension is broken down or between that which is visual and (that as) language." A very good book with a modestly up-curled front cover (a book that was read), a gentle crease through some of the page block, and some ever-so-slight edge peeling to the lamination, otherwise near fine. The collection is two long poems, one a series of linked haiku and the other in three parts that capture "McClure's state of psyche, capillaries, muscles, fears, boldnesses, and hungers down where they exist without management." Well, then.
