Undated, but probably dating to circa 1840s, this is is a very scarce map by Liddle Elliot of a new proposed road near Trentham Gardens near Stoke on Trent, the proposed road runs just south of Hargreaves Pool and across land that is now occupied by Trentham Park Golf Course. There is also a smaller inset map of another new road to run from near land End to Sprat Slade near Longton, both maps also show the elevation of the roads, the map measures30 inches by 22 inches approx., there is some noticeable edge creases, and a couple of edges tears with no loss that have been neatly repaired on reverse with acid free museum archival tape, also some dustiness to right edge which has been caused by this been the small exposed area of the map while it had been stored rolled over the years else in good general condition. a good example of this very scarce map. The Surveyor of the map Liddle Elliot was born on the 16th of October, 1807, at Trentham in Staffordshire. He was brought up as a land surveyor and articled to a Mr. Slater, who had been sent by Mr. Telford to improve the turnpike roads of North Staffordshire. On the death of that gentleman, Mr. Elliot succeeded him in this occupation and carried out many new roads besides. He was also engaged by the late Mr. Sneyd of Keele Hall in improving the roads on his estates; and gave assistance to several engineers in selecting and surveying lines for railways in Staffordshire. About the year 1845 the attention of the leading manufacturers in the Staffordshire Potteries was drawn to the very inadequate supply of water, chiefly owing to mining operations draining the springs. Mr. Elliot was employed in conjunction with the late [James Simpson|Mr. James Simpson], Past President Inst. C.E., to survey the country, and succeeded in finding an abundant supply of pure spring water at Wall Grange, near Leck, on the estate of the Duke of Sutherland, whose confidence he largely enjoyed. A company was formed, Mr. Elliot was appointed engineer, and successfully carried out the works for conveying the water a distance of 10 miles, to supply a population of about a hundred thousand inhabitants; and the Staffordshire Potteries now enjoy an excellent supply of spring water. He joined the Institution as an Associate on the 3rd of December, 1850, and died on the 1st of March, 1869, at Newcastle-under-Lyne, of which place he was mayor in 1816.

Uncommon first edition of one of the earliest books relating to the English coal trade. This work sheds light on the grievances of locals in the North East of England during the mid-seventeenth century. In 1653, Gardiner was imprisoned by the Hostmen of Newcastle upon Tyne for his refusal to cease operations at his brewery in North Shields, a small town situated to the east of Newcastle. The Hostmen, a powerful corporation of local merchants, had significant control over the trade, particularly in coal, along the River Tyne. Despite limitations imposed by the House of Commons, they exerted influence over various ports in the North East of England. ?Gardiner's petition to Oliver Cromwell, published in 1655 (the present work), demanded that the Hostmen had abused their powers, and that trade ought to be opened up on the Tyne and elsewhere. He suggested that North Shields gain a market to facilitate trade, and to help the garrison at nearby Tynemouth. Gardiner's pleas were ultimately unsuccessful. However, the Hostmen's influence did begin to diminish. This was primarily due to the increased production of coal and other goods in the region, as well as Parliamentary support for competition from other local ports such as Sunderland and Blyth.?
