Exhibition catalogue from London's Royal Academy of Arts,1995. Bound in colour printed limp wraps. 4to, 336pp, illust. Substantial monograph which includes an essay on Poussin at the Louvre by Pierre Rosenberg, over 90pp full page colour plate section, and extensive catalogue of his works from c1624 to 1665. Bibliography. Nicolas Poussin (June 1594 - 19 November 1665) was the leading painter of the classical French Baroque style, although he spent most of his working life in Rome. His work is characterized by clarity, logic, and order, and favours line over colour. In the 20th century he remained a major inspiration for such classically oriented artists as Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Paul Cézanne. He worked in Rome for a circle of leading collectors from there and elsewhere, except for a short period when Cardinal Richelieu ordered him back to France to serve as First Painter to the King. Most of his works are history paintings of religious or mythological subjects that very often have a large landscape element. Hardcover. Condition: NEW. Dust Jacket Condition: NEW. 1st. Cloth, 128 pages, colour illustrations; 29 cm. BRAND NEW. A fine copy. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. *** "Between 1995 and 1999, Leon Kossoff, immersed himself in looking at the work of the seventeenth-century French artist Nicolas Poussin. Throughout his career, Kossoff has worked from paintings by the great artists of the past drawing from them as he does from daily life, until both become part of the same working environment. However, the arrival of a major Poussin retrospective at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1995 gave Kossoff the opportunity, for the first time, to spend day after day surrounded by his source of inspiration, drawing quickly and incisively with charcoal and pastel or, more remarkably, straight on to etching plates. This book, containing over fifty full-page colour illustrations, is the first publication to examine this important new body of work." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.
