(All of which sounds like a chillingly modern premise for a book written during the supposedly buttoned-down 1950s.) This was the author's first novel; his next two, "The Ugly American" and "Fail-Safe," both written in collaboration with other writers, became well-known through their film adaptations; his final work, "The 480," published just a year before his death in 1965 at the age of 46, was a prescient work about the use of computer systems to manipulate electoral politics.
