Barnes gilt als Vertreter der Postmoderne. 1979 heiratete Barnes seine damalige Agentin Patricia Olive Kavanagh, der er auch die meisten seiner Werke gewidmet hat und deren Nachnamen er als Pseudonym wählte. Patricia Olive Kavanagh starb am 20. Oktober 2008 an den Folgen eines Gehirntumors.
