Hardcover. Condition: Fair. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, illustrated paper covered boards with leather on spine. Exterior shows scuffing and soiling along with quite a bit of edge and corner wear, front hinge is cracking on the exterior leather which has affected about 40% of the front board hinge starting at the… top. Internal binding of the text pages is good with thin cracks are present at the boards. Paper is toned due to age and scattered foxing and smudge marks are present. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings. There is some light pencil scribble marks on the rear to end pages and also at the top of the rear board. One of the front end pages are is also missing, which is the main reason why the condition grade has been lowered to fair. Book is still very readable and usable.

This offering vintage copy of The Normal Primary Arithmetic Designed as an Introduction to a Thorough and Complete Course in Mental and Written Arithmetic was written by Edward Brooks. It appears to be a Second Printing that MAY have been published in 1869 . . . though there's a date of 189…2 written in script on the front loose end page. The book was published by Christopher Sower Company in 1859 - then again in 1869. It's a very interesting look at how it was . . . and how it was taught about 130 years ago. The book has no dust jacket and is in good condition, The book is 4" by 6 1/8" and has 103 pages of text. It's really a neat old book to peruse and see . . . how arithmetic once was. Here's an example of a typical "story problem" from page 59: "A man having 50 cows lost 40 and found only 6 tenths of them; how many remained?" Thank you.

Published by Sower, Potts & Co., Philadelphia, 1873. 16mo up to 6½" tall. 176 pages; advertisements front and back endpapers. Brown cloth boards with ruled black decorative border and illu…strated blind stamped titles. Contains eight sections with lessons on fundamental operations, fractions, denominate numbers, proportion, percentage, story problems and advanced course. This book once belonged to Alice Parrott whose pencilled cursive reads: "Steal not this book/For fear of your life/For the owner carries/A long jack knife". Lucy Parrot (assumed sister to Alice), has written her name at top of front and back endpapers. Another student has pencilled instructions to return the book although her spelling and handwriting is challenging to decipher. Hinge line exposed pages 128/129, a few light pencil marks, otherwise text is fine. Boards have rubbing to edges and along spine. It is likely this copy was used in Cole Grammar School (1885-1926) , in West Oakland whose alumni include Jack London.
