Laying peacefully in a meadow in a prayer-like position, with a lite candle. His on-lookers include a bird and two adorable mice (one is holding an umbrella in his hand). Rendered in graphite on paper.ÂThe full art sheet measures 11" x 8".ÂÂThe piece is presented new matted, framed and glazed to a size of 18" x 15.5" and is adorable! This piece is INITIALED by Garth Williams bottom right. Provenance:ÂThe sheet was purchased with a group of preliminary sketches from an auction house, who in turn acquired these pieces direct from the estate of Garth Williams. Each piece is an original and sold directly from his estate.ÂA copy of the invoice will be included with each piece. The piece is a preliminary cover drawing for the book âCarrot Noseâ. SIGNED by Garth Williams lower left in full signatureÂâGarth Williamsâ, the drawing depicts the deer, who later in the final rendition is shown as swimming through the river with Carrot Nose holding onto the antlers (if you look carefully in this drawing the river water is behind the deer and his head is half submerged). In the drawing offered here, Garth Williams draws the deer in exquisite detail. Few preliminaries we have handled are ever drawn in pen, with this piece being one of the largest. The art is 10.25â x 13.5â (by sight), and is presented matted framed and glazed to a completed size of 21â x 17.5â .
