Seller: Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, bound in orange cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Title page dated 1909. 72 pages. Third edition. Binding tight and clean. This copy with bookplate on inside front cover from Jean Louis Roehrich, with handwritten shelf notes below his name. Roehrich was a well-regarded jeweler in mid-century NY, known as the curator of Henry Ford's watch collection, and purveyor of fine watches. He was the head of the NY Horological Society for many years. Watches with his imprint are still in circulation and while not high end (as luxury watches go) remain well-respected and collectible. We have a short shelf of books from his collection, listed beside this one. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it is an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although sometimes they do get it right).

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First Edition. 11 x 8 1/2 inches. Faded blue cloth binding. This is what appears to be a very early set of class notes for a course on Machine Design in 1922. Leaves printed recto only, mostly mechanically reproduced (mimeograph?). Illustrations are blueprint figures tipped in or as separate leaves and illustrate concepts, machines and/or parts. Underlining and occasional notes throughout. Illustrations, as noted below, can be tipped in on a page of text, or as a separate leaf. Chapters include: I - Methods of Machine Design, 5 leaves II - Stresses and Strains in Machines, 16 leaves + 3 illustrations (2 full page) III - Selection of Materials for Machine Design, 47 leaves + 11 illustrations + tables IV - not present V - Fastenings - Bolts and Screws, 42 leaves + 24 illustrations VI - Fastenings - Cotters and Pinned Joints, 19 leaves + 15 illustrations VII - Columns and Struts - 15 leaves + 11 illustrations + chart laid in VIII - Beams and Cantilevers - 24 leaves + 23 illustrations IX - Shafting - 39 leaves + 17 illustrations X - Belt and Rope Driving - 11 leaves + 7 illustrations XI - Pulleys - 16 leaves + 8 illustrations There are blank pages bound in at the rear, presumably for notes. Cloth. "George Bartholomew Haven, 1871 1953, S.B. 1894, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, began teaching in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT after graduation. He became an instructor in 1896, assistant professor in 1905, associate professor in 1910, and professor of machine design in 1914. He was professor of advanced machine design and head of textile research from 1929 until his retirement in 1936 as professor emeritus. He was the author of numerous articles and books on textile research and served as a consultant to textile machinery firms." (MIT Libraries Item MC-0459) The spine is marked S. S. Perry, no doubt the student who took the course from Haven. When catalogued, OCLC noted only earlier examples at MIT, dated 1914 and 1920 and none with this date. It is not uncommon with these early attempts at textbooks to have space "reserved" [as in chapter IV] for future subjects as the teacher evolves the coursework.
